OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team dropped their second straight exhibition game as they fell 73-62 to the NCAA’s University of Maine Black Bears at the Ravens’ Nest Saturday afternoon.
Despite playing their fourth game in five days, the Black Bears came out strong and jumped out to a very quick 8-0 lead just a minute and a half in. The Ravens were having difficulty getting their shots to drop. But as the quarter went on, Carleton did a good job of drawing fouls and made the Black Bears pay as they went 7-for-8 from the line in the first. The Ravens began to settle down and the end of the half was much more evenly matched. Ravens forward Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) showed a great individual effort in the dying seconds of play as he picked up his own rebound, drew the foul and completed the three-point play. His team would trail 22-14 at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
Troy Barnies (Auburn, ME) opened the second with a three to give Maine a double-digit lead. The Black Bears went on a five-point streak but the Ravens followed with a 6-0 run of their own. Carleton out-rebounded Maine, 18-16, but the Ravens’ scoring troubles continued as they shot 19.2 per cent from the field in the half, compared to the Black Bears’ 52 per cent. Maine took a 16-point lead heading into the halftime break, up 39-23.
Both teams had some jump in their step to start the third. Maine began to increase its lead thanks in large part to Alasdair Fraser, a freshman from Falkirk, Scotland. He notched six points for his team less than four minutes into the half. The Black Bears would lead by as much as 20 points in the quarter. However, the Ravens started to tighten up towards the end and cut into Maine’s lead, down 53-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Carleton carried that momentum into the fourth and began to hit their shots. Willy Manigat (Montreal) hit a three, but Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ont.) answered with a three of his own to keep his team ahead by 16. Ravens Kevin Churchill (Toronto) and Elliot Thompson (Fredericton, NB) came back with some quick baskets to pull Carleton within 11 with eight minutes left to play. Maine wouldn’t let Carleton get any closer though and the Black Bears came away with a 73-62 victory.
Rookie Philip Scrubb (Richmond, BC) stood out on his team in the fourth quarter and would end the game with 11 points and three assists. Teammate Hinz also finished the game with 11 points. Aaron Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.) had a strong outing for Carleton, netting nine points and pulling down nine rebounds in the loss.
Three Black Bears reached double digits, led by Terrance Mitchell (Milton, FL) who recorded a game-high 15 points. Sean McNally (Gardiner, ME) and Malachi Peay (Queen’s, NY) followed with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Ravens won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Black Bears, 38-33.
The Black Bears are now 4-0 on their trip to Canada. They will wrap up their tour with a game at Laval University tomorrow afternoon.
The Ravens will look for their first win of the 2010-11 preseason when they host the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in the CAN-AM Shootout at Scotiabank Place on Sept. 4. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
