Exhibition: Manitoba Bisons fall again to South Dakota 93-69

WINNIPEG - The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team took on the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits for the second time this preseason on August 27. The result wasn’t much different from the first game as the Bisons dropped their second game of the 2010-2011 season by a score of 93-69 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Bisons were led by the fifth year veteran Eric Garcia. The guard had 21 pts and added 7 assists. Forward Sean Maxwell chipped in with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp, who is beginning his second year as head coach, was able to get a look at the younger players in the line up.

“We got a good look at the young guys,” Schepp says. “We were able to evaluate what we got against a team that is a couple steps ahead of us.”

The Jackrabbits were led by Griffan Callahan’s 20 points, which includes 3 for 4 from the three point line. Guard Clint Sargent added 18 points.

The first quarter the Herd started out strong as they were down 10-8 just past the halfway mark. But the Jackrabbits, an NCAA division 1 school, pulled away in the latter point of the quarter, finishing it off with an awkward buzzer beater by guard Griffan Callahan. Callahan took two attempts at the shot, with his first bouncing off the backboard and into his hands where he was able to lay it up before the horn sounded to put South Dakota up 21-10 going into the second quarter.

The Jackrabbits continued their scoring surge against Manitoba as they were able to stretch that 11 point lead into a 25 point lead going into the half. Forward Jordan Dykstra led the way for the Jackrabbits, scoring 10 points in the quarter while adding three rebounds.

The second half was more of the same as the Bisons continued to fall behind. By the end of the third quarter South Dakota had a 34 point advantage. Manitoba was able to provide a late surge to their credit and finished the game knocking off ten points from the Jacks lead.

The Bisons don’t play next until late September when they have their Intra Squad game on September 22 and their Alumni Game on September 3. The Bisons kick of their regular season on October 7 when they visit Brock.

Note: South Dakota State University finished their four game swing of Manitoba by defeating the University of Manitoba 94-60 on Tuesday and 93-69 on Friday. They also played the University of Winnipeg who they beat on Monday by a score of 105-53 and 94-52 on Thursday.
