CIS men's basketball Wednesday roundup: Windsor, McMaster and Waterloo all winners in first games of 2011

| HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster men's basketball
team started off the 2011 portion of their season on the right note
defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks, 72-64, at the Burridge Gym
tonight.
The Marauders took the lead early in the first quarter and survived a second quarter Golden Hawk rally and led the entire second half to improve to 4-5 in conference play. Cam Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) led the Marauders with a game high 18 points. Victor Raso (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kenan Etale (Dundas, Ont.) also scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. Matthew Buckley (Waterloo, Ont.) was the top scorer for the Golden Hawks with 13 points and 9 rebounds. The Marauders will look to get back to five hundred on the season when they travel to London on Saturday, January 8 to take on the Western Mustangs. | WATERLOO, Ont. - The Waterloo Warriors overcame a
slow start and defeated the visiting Brock Badgers 90-89 in OUA
league play on Wednesday night.
The Warriors had scored just six points in the first 6 minutes of play and were behind 15-6 at the first time out. Eventually the Badgers would hold a 12 point lead before Waterloo started to narrow the gap. The second quarter was a complete reversal of the first as Waterloo finally tied it at 35-35 on a Cam McIntyre three with 2 minutes remaining in the half. Waterloo led by 2 at the break, by a score of 39-37. The second half was all offense as each team scored over 50 in the half. Waterloo shot over 50% for the second half, although just 1 of 7 from long range. Brock was just under 50% for the half. Waterloo led the half for all but a brief moment. With Waterloo holding a 7 point lead with just over four minutes remaining Brock went on an 8-0 run to take an 82-81 lead. Waterloo was able to recover the lead and hold on the rest of the way. A Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) free throw with 3 seconds remaining made it a four point difference. Brock heaved in a three from long range at the buzzer to make it a one point game. Cam McIntyre (pictured left) led the Warriors with 38 points, getting at least seven in each quarter. Brendan Smith (Kamloops, BC) had a career best in both points and rebounds with 15 points and 13 rebounds. For the Badgers, Andrew Kraus had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark Gibson with 20 and Mike Cruickshank with 19 rounded out the top scorers. Waterloo and Brock both have 5-4 records, tied for fourth spot with Western in the tight OUA West. LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs could not overcome the strong shooting of the Windsor Lancers in the second and fell 87-72 Jan. 5 at Alumni Hall.
Andy Wedemire led the Mustangs attack with 20 points, Ryan Barbeau had 14 points with eight assists and Peter Scholtes had 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Mustangs could not answer the hot shooting of Windsor's Isaac Kuon who went 8-for-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three point range for 25 points. The Lancers as a team show 56% from the field in the second half.
With the win the Lancers secure their hold on first place in the OUA West with their 8-1 record. The Mustangs slip to 5-4 on the season ending their three-game winning streak.
The Mustangs got off to a good start, rotating well on defence to have a slim three-point lead 20-17 after the first quarter.
Windsor was all over the glass in the second quarter rebounding and outscored the Mustangs 22-14 in the frame. It was a five point lead for the Lancers at half 39-34. For the game the Lancers dominated the board grabbing 11 offensive boards and outrebounding the Mustangs 30-23.
In the second half the Lancers broke down Western's zone with some hot shooting as four Lancers finished with 3 three-pointers each. In total, the Lancers shot 44% from long range, hitting 12 shots from deep.
Western could not mount any sort of a run and played even with the Lancers in the third but entered the fourth quarter down 61-53.
With the Lancers continuing their strong shooting performance the benches were emptied and Windsor extended their lead as the game finished 87-72.
