OUA roundup: Top-ranked teams win on Saturday


SUDBURY, Ont. - The Carleton Ravens (17-2) men's basketball team bounced back from a loss to defeat the Laurentian Voyageurs 83-71 Saturday night in Sudbury, Ont.

The first quarter saw foul trouble for Ravens forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) who was hit with two early on. With strong offensive rebounding, Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) was able to hit from the inside and Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) knocked down a three to give the team an 11-point lead with a minute to go. With a two from Laurentian's Matas Tirilis (Mississauga, Ont.) at the buzzer, the quarter finished 22-12 for the Ravens.

The second saw more offensive rebounds from Carleton, including Aaron Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.) who went up strong in the paint for two to widen the lead. Laurentian's Jamie Weldon (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) hit a three with two minutes to go to bringing the lead back to 10. At the end of the half, Carleton dominated the rebounds with 42 compared to Laurentian's 14. 

Mike Kenny (Ottawa) dropped three early on in the third making it harder for the Voyageurs to grab momentum from the start. Manny Pasquale (Victoria) who finished with 17, kept Laurentian in the game as the team continued to chip away at the Ravens lead in the second half.

The Voyageurs tried to keep their rhythm in the fourth cutting the lead down to single digits after two foul shots by Georges Serresse (Sudbury, Ont.) with a little over two minutes to go in the game. Hobin answered right away with a three at the other end and the Ravens held on for the 83-71 victory.

High scorer for Laurentian was Serresse with 21. Ravens leaders were Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) with 21, McCleery with 16, Hobin with 13 and Kenny with 11.

The Ravens finished with 54 rebounds while the Voyageurs (6-12) had 24.

OTTAWA 85, YORK 71

At York, Josh Gibson-Bascombe scored a game-high 32 points to lift the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (16-3) to an 85-71 win over the host Lions (4-14).

Gibson-Bascombe's teammate Warren Ward was also a force offensively, scoring 22 points. Ward was one rebound short of a double-double.

David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Lions with 17 points.

LAKEHEAD 65, WATERLOO 61

At Lakehead, the No. 8 Thunderwolves (14-4) swept their weekend series against the Waterloo Warriors (8-10), winning 65-61.

Andrew Hackner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) led all Thunderwolves with 19 points, while teammate Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) was good for 16 points.

Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville, Ont.) earned a double-double for the Warriors in a losing effort, scoring 12 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.

WINDSOR 63, LAURIER 61

At Windsor, the No. Lancers (13-5) came back to earn a 63-61 win against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (7-11).

Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 17 points to lead the Lancers. Nigel Johnson-Tyghter (Brampton, Ont.) contributed 13 points, including a key dunk in the fourth quarter which propelled the Lancers to the victory.

Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.) scored a game-high 20 points for the Golden Hawks.

MCMASTER 89, BROCK 69

At Brock, the McMaster Marauders (12-6) earned an 89-69 road victory over the Badgers (8-10).

Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) earned a rare triple-double, with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Teammate Cameron Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) added 21 points for McMaster.

Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) of the Badgers led all players with a 31-point effort.

QUEEN'S 70, TORONTO 62

At Toronto, the Queen's Gaels (10-9) earned a 70-62 road victory against the Varsity Blues (8-10).

Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) led the way for the Gaels with a double-double, contributing 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) scored a team-high 17 points for the Varsity Blues.

WESTERN 84, GUELPH 80

At Western, the Mustangs (10-8) defeated the Guelph Gryphons 84-80.

Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) earned a double-double for Western, with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) scored a game-high 33 points for the Gryphons (5-13) in a losing effort.

RYERSON 101, RMC 70

At Ryerson, Boris Bakovic (Toronto, Ont.) scored 36 points to lead the Rams (8-10) to a 101-70 win against the RMC Paladins (0-19).

Bakovic was one rebound shy of a double-double. Teammate Ryan McNeilly (Toronto) also scored 24 points to lead the Rams cause.

Matthew Wookey (Sarnia, Ont.) and Nicolas Cooke (Toronto) both scored a team-high 16 points for the Paladins.
