OUA roundup: No. 2 Ravens down No. 10 Varsity Blues

TORONTO - Nick Magalas recorded his 1,000th career point as the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 80-61 to the No. 2 Carleton Ravens on Saturday at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

The Burlington, Ont. native dominated throughout the game, going 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 8-of-9 from the free throw line on his way to a game-high 33-point performance.

With the loss, the Blues sit in fourth place in the OUA East division with a 6-6 record, while the Ravens improve to 11-1 and maintain their first-place standing.

Toronto kept pace with the CIS defending champion Ravens throughout the first half. Despite shooting 32 percent from the floor compared to the Ravens 48 percent, the Blues only trailed by four points (34-30) at the half. Magalas accounted for 12 of U of T's 13 points in the second quarter.

Ravens guards Michael Kenny (Ottawa) and Elliot Thompson (Fredericton), as well as fifth-year forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) took charge in the second half.  Hinz led the way, draining five three-pointers as the trio combined for 40 of Carleton's 46 second-half points to put the game out of reach.

Toronto only trailed by six points heading into the final frame, however the injury-ridden squad could not keep up with the Ravens in the fourth, who extended their lead to 19 points at the final buzzer.

Michael and Thompson led the Ravens with 20 and 24 points, respectively, while Tyson Hinz has 11 points and eight boards. Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) tallied a game-high 12 boards and McCleery walked away with 10 points in the win.

Magalas accounted for over half of Toronto's points on the night. Fellow fifth-year guard Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) recorded seven points, while forward Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo) had six points and eight boards in the loss.

LAKEHEAD 79, LAURIER 65


At Wilfrid Laurier, the No. 6 Lakehead Thunderwolves (10-2) rebounded from a Friday loss to the Golden Hawks, winning 79-65.

Both Greg Carter (Ottawa) and Joseph Jones (Washington, D.C.) each scored 14 points to lead the Thunderwolves. Two Lakehead players earned double-doubles, including Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Yoosria Salhia with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Brendan King also contributed 13 points for the Thunderwolves.

Travis Berry scored a game-high 19 points for the Golden Hawks (5-7).

WINDSOR 82, MCMASTER 77

At McMaster, the No. 7 Windsor Lancers (9-3) earned an 82-77 road victory over the Marauders (6-6).

Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.) scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Nigel Johnson-Tyghter (Brampton, Ont.) scored 15 points, while Lien Phillip and Monty Hardware (Toronto) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

McMaster's Cameron Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) scored a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Tyrell Vernon (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 21 points.

OTTAWA 92, RYERSON 63

At Ryerson, the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees (10-2) upended the host Rams 92-63.

Donnie Gibson led the Gee-Gees with 21 points, while teammate Josh Gibson-Bascombe recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists.

Ryerson's Boris Bakovic (Toronto) led all scorers with 33 points. The Rams dropped to 4-8 with the defeat.

BROCK 85, WESTERN 80

At Western, Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) scored 23 points in his hometown to lead the Brock Badgers (5-7) to an 85-80 road victory over the Mustangs (7-5).

Andrew Ferguson (St. Catharines, Ont.) added 18 points for the Badgers, while teammate Mike Cruikshank scored 16.

The Mustangs were led by Andrew Wedemire's (Sarnia, Ont.) 27 points and 18 rebounds. Western's Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) contributed 20 points.

LAURENTIAN 79, QUEEN'S 74

At Laurentian, Manny Pasquale (Victoria) scored 24 points and Isiah Pasquale (Victoria) added 21 to lead the host Voyageurs (4-8) to a 79-74 win over the Queen's Gaels (7-6).

Laurentian's Paul Kovacs (Barrie, Ont.) shot 80 percent from the field (4-of-5) including a 67 percent success rate from three-point land (2-of-3) for 12 points.

Queen's Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) scored 32 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double.

GUELPH 68, WATERLOO 58

At Guelph, Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) scored 18 points to lead the Gryphons (4-8) to a 68-58 home win over the Waterloo Warriors (7-5).

Adam Bering (Tecumseh, Ont.) contributed a double-double for the Gryphons with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

David Burnett (Heidelberg, Ont.) and Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) scored 17 points each for the Warriors.

YORK 117, RMC 71

At York, the Lions (2-10) mauled the RMC Paladins 117-71.

Six players scored in double figures for the Lions, including Ostap Choliy's (Oakville, Ont.) team-high 27 points. Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.), Malik Diaz-Mercurius (Burlington, Ont.) and David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) contributed 19, 12 and 11 points respectively, while Vadim Razenberg (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Tyler Anderson (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 10 points each.

RMC's Nicolas Cooke (Toronto) scored 29 points in a losing effort. The Paladins fell to 0-13 on the season.
