OUA roundup: Golden Hawks upset No. 6 Thunderwolves
WATERLOO, Ont. - Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) scored 20 points to
lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 69-59 victory over the
No. 6 nationally-ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday.
Laurier moves to 5-6 on the season while the Thunderwolves falls to
9-2.
"We played really well on defence, " said head coach Peter
Campbell. "With the struggles that Kale and Jesse were
having, the rest of the team stepped up in a huge way."
The Hawks took control of the game in the second quarter when they
outscored the visitors 21-9 to give them a halftime lead of 34-24.
Laurier continued to build on the lead in the third to go up 51-39,
but got into penalty trouble late in the fourth. After four calls
against the Hawks the team regrouped and held off the charging
Thunderwolves to earn the win.
"Our defensive rebounding was excellent," said Campbell, whose team
compiled 29 defensive boards and held the visitors to just nine
offensive rebounds.
Laurier's Max Allin led the team on the glass with
eight rebounds, followed by Travis Berry (St.
Catharines, Ont.), Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.)
and Andrew Pennycook (Toronto) who all had five
each. Berry also had a 13-point night.
For the Thunderwolves, Yoosria Salhia (Toronto)
scored a game-high 22 points and Brendan King
(Petawawa, Ont.) chipped in 11. Salhia also led the team with nine
boards.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the
Wilfrid Laurier Athletic Complex.
CARLETON 89, RYERSON 49
At Ryerson, the No. 2 Carleton Ravens (10-1) soared to an 89-49
victory over the Ryerson Rams (4-7).
The Ravens had five players who scored in double figures, including
Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) with a game-high 20 points.
Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) and Anthony
Ashe (Stittsville, Ont.) each contributed 14 points, while
Michael Kenny (Ottawa) and Kevin
McCleery (Ottawa) each earned 12 points.
Ryan McNeilly (Toronto) led the Rams with a
team-high 14 points.
OTTAWA 74, TORONTO 65
At Toronto, the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees (9-2) defeated the No. 10
Varsity Blues 74-65.
Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) and Warren
Ward led the way with 17 points each for the Gee-Gees.
Gibson-Bascombe also contributed 10 assists for the
double-double.
Nick Magalas scored a team-high 15 points for the Varsity
Blues (6-5). Teammate Justin Holmes (Toronto)
added 14 points.
QUEEN'S 81, YORK 73
At York, Mitch Leger was a force on both ends of
the court as the Queen's Gaels (7-5) defeated the host Lions
81-73.
Leger (Kingston, Ont.) scored a game-high 25 points, and snagged 13
rebounds for the double-double. A dozen of the rebounds were in the
defensive zone.
Ozren Opacic (Burlington, Ont.) added 16 for the
Gaels.
David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) was York's
high-scorer with 18 points. Vadim Razenberg
(Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for
a double-double.
The Lions fell to 1-10 on the season.
LAURENTIAN 81, RMC 62
At Laurentian, the Voyageurs (3-8) defeated the visiting RMC
Paladins 81-62.
Eleven different Voyageurs contributed points for Laurentian.
Georges Serresse (Sudbury, Ont.) led the Voyageurs
with 12 points.
Jonathon Wilson (Windsor, Ont.) and
Matthew Wookey (Sarnia, Ont.) scored 16 points
each for the Paladins (0-12). Wilson grabbed 10 rebounds for the
double-double.
