Spartan Doerksen's double-double downs Bears

Reining CIS player of the year Jacob Doerksen record a double-double as the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 83-55 Saturday night in the U of A's Main Gym.

Doerksen (4th, Abbotsford, B.C.) scored the game high in points and rebounds, 25 and 14 respectively, as the Spartans rolled over the home town Bears. Three other Spartans picked up double-digit points, with Daniel Horner (4th, Abbotsford, B.C.) and Calvin Westbrook (3rd, Courtenay, B.C.) each banking 11 points, while Lance Verhoeff (4th, Calgary) added 10 points.

Alberta had three players hit double-digit points unfortunately not one of them was a starter, as the Golden Bear starting five combined for 12 points. Veterans Harvey Bradford (5th, Skookumchuck, B.C.) and Scott Leigh (4th, North Vancouver, B.C.) came off the bench to lead Alberta in scoring with 15 and 13 respectively, as Alberta rookie head coach Greg Francis elected to look to the future and start three freshman, one college transfer and a sophomore against the Spartans.

Another CIS freshman, Todd Bergen-Henengouwen (1st, Picture Butte, Alta) served notice of his abilities by establishing a career best with 11 points, nine of which came off three triples in a row.

Trinity Western, who beat the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night before coming to Edmonton, led right from the get-go Saturday and was never in danger of losing the lead against Alberta.

The Spartans opened up with an 8-2 lead that quickly became a 16-8 advantage after 10.

After 20 minutes the lead swelled to 21 points as TWU used a 24-11 second quarter score to leave the Golden Bears staring up at a 40-19 deficit at the half.

Francis, clearly not happy with his troops in the opening half, managed to spur his team onto a better second half, but the damage had already been done.

The Golden Bears scored 19 third quarter points, equalling their entire first half output, and then notched 17 in the fourth, but, were outscored in every quarter by the Spartans, who improve to 6-3 on the season.

Alberta, who drops to 5-7, were also, beat on the glass 52-34. Both teams used the long ball to great effect as Trinity shooters connected on nine of 27 attempts, highlighted by three by Horner. The Golden Bears got three apiece from Leigh and Bergen-Henengouwen, but it was the rookie who left an impression as he sunk three in a row in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans are in Simon Fraser next weekend, while the Bears won't see any easier opposition as they travel south to Calgary to take on the division leading Dinos who are 9-2 on the year.
