OUA roundup: No. 2 Ravens rout Voyageurs

OTTAWA - The No. 2 nationally-ranked Carleton Ravens (8-1) men's basketball team came up with a convincing 87-37 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-7) Friday night in their first home matchup of the year.

The Ravens looked good coming out of Christmas training camp, keeping the Voyageurs to six points in the first quarter while scoring 14.

The Ravens continued to be aggressive against the Voyageurs scoring the majority of their points from the perimeter. Fourth year point guard Michael Kenny (Ottawa) would lead the Ravens early with 15 points from the three.

The Ravens battled hard in the paint and got numerous second and third chances from offensive rebounds. The Ravens also took advantage on defensive rebounds, pushing the ball in transition and dishing to the open man on the perimeter. A three-pointer by Kenny just before the half time buzzer would give the Ravens a 41-17 lead going into the second half of the game.

In the third quarter of play the Ravens continued to push the ball in transition and looked more to their post play while still continuing to hit shots from the perimeter.

Fourth year guard Luke Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.) stepped up in the second half for the Ravens hitting some tough shots from the perimeter including a long three in the fourth quarter as the shot clock was winding down.

First year forward Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) also stepped up for the Ravens, hitting shots and making nice plays inside the paint. He would lead the Ravens and all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds for the game.

The Ravens were successful by out-rebounding the Voyageurs 39-19 for the game and pushing the ball in transition to give them open looks, while being extremely effective on the defensive end letting the Voyageurs only score three points in the final quarter and holding them to 37 points for the game.

The Ravens were also led by Kenny (Ottawa) and Aaron Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.) who each contributed 15 points while brother Luke Chapman added 12 to the win.

The Voyageurs were led by second year guard Isiah Pasquale (Victoria) who was the only Voyageur to score in double digits with 12 points.

LAKEHEAD 80, MCMASTER 72

At Lakehead, in a CIS Top 10 showdown, the No. 10 Lakehead Thunderwolves (8-1) defeated the No. 6 McMaster Marauders (5-4) by an 80-72 count on Friday night.

The Thunderwolves had a well-balanced attack, with five players scoring 10 points or more. Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) and Joseph Jones (Washington, D.C.) led the Thunderwolves with 15 points each.

Sebastian Kasiuk (Barrie, Ont.) added 14 points, Andrew Hackner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored 11 and Yoosrie Salhia (Toronto) chipped in 10.

Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) scored a game-high 24 points in a losing effort.

QUEEN'S 67, TORONTO 62

At Queen's, the host Gaels outscored the No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues 22-16 in the final quarter to pull out a 67-62 win.

Michel Leger scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Gaels, who improved to 5-5 on the season.

Robert Paris netted 15 points for the Varsity Blues, who drop to 5-4.

RYERSON 78, RMC 69

At RMC, the Ryerson Rams pulled out a 78-69 road victory over the Paladins.

Ryerson's Boris Bakovic (Toronto), the OUA leader in points, added another 38 points to his season total. The Rams improved to 4-5.

Gavin Viray-Cox (Georgetown, Ont.) led winless RMC (0-10) with 18 points.

OTTAWA 91, YORK 82

At Ottawa, Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) scored 29 points to lead the Gee-Gees (7-2) to a 91-82 victory over the York Lions (1-8).

Warren Ward also contributed 20 points to the victory. York was led by Dejan Kravic's 20-point effort.

The Gee-Gees had a 45-38 lead at halftime.
