Ravens close off weekend with win over Waterloo Warriors 94-67
The Carleton University Ravens Men’s Basketball team
defeated the University of Waterloo Warriors 94-67 in their last
home game of the year Saturday night.
The Ravens took an early lead in the first quarter of basketball
action at the Ravens’ Nest but the Warriors were able to
slowly chip away at the difference trailing 29-20 after the
first.
Going into the second quarter the Ravens continued to play their
inside-out game with veteran players Elliot Thompson (Fredericton,
NB) and Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) who led the Ravens in scoring and
rebounding in the first half. Despite some trouble guarding
Warriors veteran guard Ben Frisby (Vancouver, BC) the Ravens were
able to hit more shots as a team from the perimeter and inside the
paint which gave them a 52-38 advantage going into the second
half.
Coming out of the half time break the Ravens were better able to
stop Warriors’ main player Frisby and were able to break down
Warriors defence by feeding the ball into the post. First year
forward Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) and second year forward Kyle Smendziuk
(Kanata, Ont) also stepped up in the third quarter putting points
on the board for the Ravens.
Carleton was able to effectively outrebound and outscore the
Warriors in every quarter, giving the visiting team no chance to
get back into the game.
The Warriors were able to hold the point margin within 20 points in
the fourth quarter. But with two minutes left in the game the
Ravens were able to pull away and win the game 94-67.
Carleton was led by McCleery who had 19 points and nine rebounds.
Waterloo was led by Frisby who contributed 19 points in the
loss.
The Ravens improve their record 6-0 and look to face the McMaster
University Marauders and the Lakehead University Thunderwolves next
weekend in Hamilton and Thunder Bay, Ont.
