Ryerson's Rana in Puerto Rico with national team

TORONTO - Ryerson Rams men's basketball coach Roy Rana will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico this week with the Canadian Senior Men's National Team for the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship.

Rana will serve as an assistant with head coach Leo Rautins' staff. The coaching staff also includes Mike Malone, an assistant coach for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. Along with Rautins, a TV commentator for the Toronto Raptors, and Malone, other notable members of the national men's squad include Joel Anthony, a forward for the NBA's Miami Heat and Carl English, a national team veteran.

Rana joins Rautins' staff with international experience as the head coach of the Cadet Men's National Team that recently qualified for the 2010 under-17 world championships. The Canadians qualified by finishing third in the FIBA Americas under-16 zone championships in Argentina in June.

Canada kicks off its schedule at the FIBA Americas Championship on August 27 against Mexico before taking on the Virgin Islands on August 28 and Uruguay on August 29. The team wraps up round robin play against Puerto Rico on August 30. The top four teams in the group advance to the second round. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey.
