MONTREAL - The CIS defending champion Varsity Blues field hockey
team opened their 2011 campaign with two shut out victories over
the Queen’s Gaels and York Lions on Friday, September 16 at
McGill Stadium.
In their first game of the day, 2010-11 Varsity Blues female
athlete of the year Kaelan Watson scored two goals in leading U of
T to a 6-0 win over Queen’s. Veterans Hannah Tighe and
Katherine McNeill, as well as Alexandra Evanyshyn and Gabriella
Permell each added single tallies in the win.
The Blues were equally as dominant in their second contest, downing
York 8-0. Evanyshyn recorded her first hat trick of the
season, with Watson adding another two of her own. Tighe,
Permell and sophomore Alex Thicke rounded out the scoring with one
goal apiece.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Sunday, September 18 when
they travel to Guelph, Ont., to take on the Waterloo
Warriors. Game time is set for 1:45 p.m.
McGill 2 York 0
Final
MONTREAL – Sarah Main and Maria Oswald, both natives of
Vancouver, B.C., each scored as McGill blanked the visiting
York University Lions 2-0 to win their second straight OUA
women’s field hockey game at Forbes Field, Friday.
The result, mirrored a 2-0 conquest over Queen’s in the
league opener, Thursday. In that game, Oswald and Main also teamed
up to score.
Main, a freshman forward, was credited with the game-winner against
York, while Oswald, a sophomore midfielder registered her winning
tally against the Lions.
Goalkeeper Jaqueline Riddle, a biochemistry sophomore from Guelph,
Ont., was unsolvable both days and earned back-to-back
shutouts.
The two-game sweep for the Martlets matches last year’s
debut, which was the team’s best beginning in more than three
decades.
McGill (2-0) will head down Highway 401 next weekend for three
games in two days at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. They will take on
the omnipotent Toronto Varsity Blues (2-0), perennial OUA
champions, on Sept. 24, followed by a doubleheader on Sept. 25
against Waterloo and Western.
