WATERLOO, Ont. - The Varsity Blues field hockey team clinched second place with two victories over the York Lions and Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, October 23 in Waterloo, Ont.
The Blues finish the season 13-1-0 and await the result of Guelph's last game versus York to determine who will finish first in the standings. Either way, both Toronto and Guelph advance to the semifinals next Saturday at Downsview Stadium.
Fifth-year forward Yvonne Langen of Cambridge, Ont., led the Blues with two goals in a 4-0 victory over York, while Alex Thick and Kaelan Watson added single tallies in the win.
The Blues got out to a slow start versus Waterloo, but battled back to take the game 7-2. Langen and Alexandra Evanysnyn (Burlington, Ont.) each netted two goals, while Thicke, Kyesia O'Neale and Emily Roy scored one each to round out the victory.
"It was a great way to finish league play," said head coach John DeSouza. "We are happy to note that of our 20 players, we have had 15 different scorers this year."

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds survived a wild finish on Saturday to pick up a 3-2 win against Victoria at Wright Field and claim the Canada West title for the eighth year in a row.
UBC's standout rookie Natalie Sourisseau scored two goals for UBC, including the game-winner just two minutes before Perri Espeseth got the Vikes' second goal. She collected a loose ball in the middle of the circle with her back to the goal, but was able to turn and shoot before defenders could close in on her to put the home side up 3-1.
Although the Vikes failed to pick up a point, Calgary's loss to Alberta means Victoria is now guaranteed a spot at CIS Nationals regardless of the outcome of Sunday's action.
The T-Birds and Vikes will wrap up the regular season on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., and although the conference standings will not change tomorrow, the sparks should be flying once again at Wright Field as these two CIS tournament-bound squads battle for momentum heading into nationals.

Kincso Santha, Jennifer Peacock, and Carly Flemming scored for the Pandas, while a late Courtney Campbell penalty stroke was all the offence the Dinos could muster.
The result means that Victoria and UBC will represent Canada West at the CIS championships in Guelph Nov. 4-7.
