Trautman tallies again as Pandas tie in Victoria
VICTORIA - In the rematch of the 2008 CIS championship, the UVic Vikes (2-2-3) women's field hockey couldn't top the visiting Alberta Pandas (2-3-2) as the game ended in a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon.
Although the Vikes showed some offensive flair early on, it was the Pandas who struck first as they were able to slide the ball through Vikes keeper' Kaitlyn Williams' legs in the 38th minute.
The Vikes quickly answered however, as Vikes, second-year midfielder, Danielle Hennig potted her first goal of the season. She hammered a backhand shot past Pandas keeper Tory Spencer to tie up the game.
Vikes Coach Lynne Beecroft loved the play from Hennig today, "I think dani played absolutely stellar. She passed and tackled well. She was basically our player of the game."
Coach Beecroft also singled out Vikes fifth year Katie Collison. "I thought she had a great game and created some killer scoring chances."
Unfortunately for the Vikes, the would-be game-winning goal was disallowed as it was deflected in off a high stick by Hennig. A second disallowed goal was called back on the Vikes as it went off a Vikes foot in the Pandas' ‘d'.
The Vikes and Pandas return to the UVic turf on Sunday morning at 11:00 to finish off the weekend series.
