SASKATOON - Provincial foes the University of Saskatchewan Huskies
and the University of Regina Rams will renew their bitter rivalry
in an early season contest Friday in Saskatoon’s Griffiths
Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
The Huskies opened the Canada West season last week with a 38-7 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears, the Rams had an unexpected 0-1 start after loosing 21-10 to the UBC Thunderbirds. Since the Rams joined the league, the Huskies are 18-6 against their provincial foes.
Hurting the Rams in the opening game was an injury to starting quarterback and leader Marc Mueller. The injury forced him out of the game in the Rams first drive. Backup Dylan Hart entered the game completing 14-of-28 passes for 134 yards with one touchdown. The rookie quarterback is the brother to Huskie defensive lineman Zach Hart.
Running back Adrian Charles once again was a big threat on the ground for the Rams carrying the ball 26 times for 192 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. He also added three catches for 16 receiving yards. Jared Janotta was the main receiving target in last week’s affair making eight catches for 99 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, Justin Edralin and Austin Bates led the Rams with 5.5 tackles each. Bates also added a sack.
Huskie second-year quarterbacks Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren and Trent Peterson split time calling the plays. Gilbert-Knorren played the majority of the game completing 15-of-22 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown. Peterson went five-for-seven for 81 yards and one touchdown. Gilbert-Knorren combined with running back Ben Coakwell for 104 rushing yards in the game.
The Huskies received scoring help from the defence and special teams. Defensive back Seamus Neary snagged an interception returning the ball 60-yards for a touchdown last week, while 2010 conference all-star on returns Luke Thiel added his second career punt return bringing the ball back 62 yards into the end zone.
Defensively, the Huskies were strong on all areas of the field with four Huskies with four or more tackles including Zach Hart, Neary, Mitch Friesen, Peter Thiel and Steven Kovach.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 306-966-1111. It can be heard on CK750 or www.ck750.com. The game can be seen live on Shaw Cable.
Game Notes: The game is part of Huskie Week celebrating Huskie Athletics Centennial. University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame inductees will be on hand signing autographs, and history will be displayed in a Centennial tent for fans to look at. The 2011 induction class includes Dan Farthing, Kelsie Hendry, Mickey Jutras, Kent Kowalski, Jacqueline Lavallee, Jamie Epp, Al Bodnarchuk, the 1987-88 men’s volleyball team and the 1996 football team. The game will also mark the annual Saskatchewan Hall of Fame game between the two rivals.
No. 10 UBC at No. 4 Calgary 7 pm MDT
By Calgary Sports Info
CALGARY – For the first time since 2007, the University of Calgary Dinos head into Week 2 of the season with a 1-0 record as they prepare to face the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at McMahon Stadium.
It’s KICKOFF VI, the University of Calgary’s annual homecoming game that caps off the 2011 EPIC Orientation Week for incoming students. The pre-game tailgate in the east parking lot of McMahon Stadium opens proceedings at 4 p.m. with free Spolumbo’s sausages for the first 2,000 fans in attendance, served by members of the university’s senior administration and Student and Enrolment Services.
The Dinos and Thunderbirds will kick off at 7 p.m., live on CanadaWest.tv. Throughout the game students will have a chance to win great prizes, including a $2,500 tuition voucher for the Most Devoted Dinos Fan.
Amongst the off-field proceedings is a football game that, like every other game in Canada West, holds very little room for error for either side. The Dinos will face a confident Thunderbirds team that looked impressive in a 21-10 upset victory over Regina last week and is widely considered to be a playoff contender in 2011. Calgary, meanwhile, escaped University Stadium in Winnipeg with a turnover-aided, come-from-behind 35-31 victory over the Manitoba Bisons last week thanks to Chris Dobko’s game-winning touchdown catch with just 22 seconds left.
It has been more than five years since the Thunderbirds last
defeated the Dinos, and that was in Blake Nill’s first-ever
game as head coach in Calgary back in September 2006. Since then,
the Dinos have racked up five straight wins over UBC, including a
33-16 triumph in the teams’ only meeting of the 2010 season
at McMahon Stadium.
Pre-season prognosticators had the Regina Rams pegged to win Canada West this season, but that all changed last week when UBC went into Mosaic Stadium and knocked out the Rams with a stunning 21-10 victory. Now, the winner of Friday night’s game at McMahon is guaranteed at least a share of first place heading into Week 3.
Here’s a look at the two teams:
No. 4 Calgary Dinos (1-0)
Last week: defeated Manitoba 35-31
Next week: at Regina
The Dinos held on to their No. 4 ranking this week by the skin of their teeth and not much else after a stirring comeback in the fourth quarter last week against Manitoba. The beneficiaries of three Bison fumbles in the final frame, the Dinos scored the winning touchdown with just 22 ticks on the clock and held on for a 35-31 win, their first season-opening victory since 2007.
It was a daring escape act by a team that scored when it needed to and got defensive stops when necessary – but one that dug itself a hole in the third quarter, giving up a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the half as well as a 90-yard pass-and-run major. Sophomore quarterback Eric Dzwilewski improved to 5-1 as a starter in CIS with the victory.
Jake Harty made an early impression in his first CIS game, returning his first touch of the football 88 yards to the house on a Manitoba kickoff in the first quarter. The Calgary Colts product out of Henry Wise Wood High School put up 242 all-purpose yards in the game and was named the Canada West special teams player of the week for his efforts.
Another bright spot for the Dinos was the run game, which again demonstrated its explosiveness. Dzwilewski combined with tailbacks Matt Walter and Steven Lumbala to pound the ball downfield 242 yards, and you can bet the Dinos will look to do the same against the Thunderbirds Friday night.
The Dinos defence came up big when called upon last week, recovering four Manitoba fumbles and limiting the Bisons offence in the pivotal fourth quarter. Defending conference defensive MVP Sam Hurl led the way with 7.5 tackles, while linebacker Cory Roboch had an impressive start to his varsity career with 2.5 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Transfer Jordan Verdone (Waterloo) also proved he will be a force to be reckoned with in Canada West, putting up five tackles in his first game with the Dinos.
Calgary heads to Regina next week to face the Rams before returning home to host Saskatchewan on Friday, Sept. 23.
No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds (1-0)
Last week: defeated Regina 21-10
Next week: host Alberta
There’s a renewed sense of optimism at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver under second-year head coach Shawn Olson. Led by fourth-year quarterback Billy Greene, the UBC Thunderbirds are on a mission to return to the Canada West post-season this year, and they’ll certainly be out to prove Friday night that last week’s upset in Regina wasn’t just a flash in the pan.
The 21-10 victory over then-No. 6 Regina vaulted UBC into the FRC-CIS Top 10 this week, where they are ranked as the No. 10 team in the nation. Offensively, they moved the ball efficiently and set the tone early when Greene found Jordan Grieve for a 63-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the contest. Grieve had another long-bomb catch in the second quarter, a 31-yard reception that set up what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown by freshman running back Brandon Deschamps.
Greene put up 262 passing yards against the Rams and was also the T-Birds’ leading rusher with 38 net yards. Grieve was his top target, racking up 109 yards on just three receptions, while Micha Theil hauled in four passes on the night as the UBC offence spread the ball around with seven different receivers getting into the act.
Defensively, the Thunderbirds had trouble stopping the run against Regina as Adrian Charles ran roughshod for 192 yards. However, they were able to contain backup quarterback Dylan Hart, who came in to replace fifth-year star Marc Mueller who injured his throwing arm in the Rams’ first offensive series of the night and is out indefinitely. Hart completed 14 of 28 passes for just 134 yards as the Thunderbirds were able to limit the Regina passing attack.
A victory over Calgary would put UBC in great shape as the Thunderbirds head back west for a pair of home games against Alberta and Manitoba.
Calgary and UBC will face off once more this season, closing the regular campaign Oct. 29 at Thunderbird Stadium in the Canada West/Shaw TV Game of the Week.

THE RECORDS: Both teams suffered season-opening losses at home. Concordia fell 36-8 to No. 1 Laval, while the Gaiters dropped a 25-23 decision to then-No. 8 Sherbrooke. Last year, the Gaiters went 5-4, while Concordia was 4-5.
LAST TIME OUT: A pair of second-quarter touchdowns by Simon Charbonneau-Campeau led Sherbrooke to a 25-23 win over the Gaiters on Sept. 4 at Coulter Field. He gave Sherbrooke a 22-7 halftime lead, and they held off a late Gaiters' comeback to escape with the two-point victory. Geoff Coventry, John Jean-Baptiste scored touchdowns for the Gaiters. The Gaiters outgained Sherbrooke 384-274, including 343 passing yards. Bishop’s committed five turnovers, while only forcing two. The teams combined for 39 penalties, with Sherbrooke taking 19 for 130, while Bishop's had 20 for 170. For Bishop's, Jordan Heather went 17-for-26 for 213 yards, while Alex Rivet was 5-for-10 for 130 yards after taking over in the fourth. Turner had a strong game in his return to Lennoxville, making an 84-yard touchdown catch and posting a team-high 150 all-purpose yards.
THE SERIES: The Gaiters lead the all-time series 35-28-2. The Gaiters have won three of the past four games in the series, after ending a ten-game Concordia winning streak. The teams split a pair of low-scoring games last season, with Concordia picking up a 17-14 win in Lennoxville, and Bishop’s edging the Stingers 18-17 in Montreal. The Gaiters have won two of the last three matchups at Coulter Field. The first meeting between the two teams came in Lennoxville on October 4, 1975, when the Gaiters upset the heavily favoured Concordians 13-11.
LAST MEETING: A 22-yard field goal by Josh Maveety with 24 seconds to go lifted the No. 9-ranked Gaiters to an 18-17 victory over Concordia on Sept. 25, 2010. Maveety’s field goal capped a Bishop’s comeback from 17-7 down with three minutes left. The Gaiters’ comeback started with 2:43 left, when David Haddrall caught a seven-yard pass from Jesse Andrews in the back of the end zone to pull the Gaiters to within three points, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive. On the ensuing kickoff, Maveety fired the ball through the end zone to score an 85-yard single, cutting the margin to 17-15. Maveety finished the game with 12 points, as he was good on three of four field goal attempts (from 19, 15 and 22), scored a conversion and added two single points. Andrews went 17-for-28 for 219 yards and a touchdown, and was the Gaiters’ leading rusher, with 49 yards on eight carries.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINS: The Gaiters will have six captains for the 2011 season, as voted on by the team’s upperclassmen. On defence, the captains are defensive backs Harrison Maloney and Jermaine Lewis-Parris as well as linebacker Tyler Jutras. On offence, the Gaiters are led by receivers Steven Turner and David Haddrall, along with offensive lineman Kyle Handy.
THE HEATHER REPORT: In his first career regular-season CIS start, Jordan Heather went 17-for-26 for 213 yards and a touchdown. He is currently 9th in the CIS with 17 completions, and is 11th in the country in both completion percentage (65.4%) and yards (213). Overall, the Gaiters have the conference’s top-rated pass offence, with 343 yards last week.
A HEAD-TURNER: Steven Turner, a former Toronto Argonauts draft pick, had an impressive return to the Gaiters on Sunday. He led the Gaiters with 150 all-purpose yards on Sunday, including six catches for 99 yards. His 84-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was a career-long.
WATTS LIGHTS IT UP: Defensive Lineman Jonathan “JonBon” Watts had an impressive CIS debut on Sunday. Playing his first regular-season game of Canadian Football, he made one sack for four yards, and knocked down two passes. In two seasons at Butte Junior College at California, the native of Gainesville, Florida, made 62.5 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and five sacks, and was a conference all-star both years.
CFL GAITERS UPDATE: With Justin Conn signing with Calgary on August 31, there are now nine Gaiters active in the CFL. Conn played his first game with the Stampeders on Monday. His teammate, Junior Turner, had a pair of tackles in the Stamps’ loss to Edmonton. Altogether, a record ten Gaiters have played in the CFL this year. Shawn Gore of the B.C. Lions continues to lead all Canadian receivers with 482 yards on 37 catches. Kyle Jones of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is fourth in the CFL with 12 Special Teams Tackles, while his former linebacking partner James Yurichuk (now with B.C.) has 8 Special Teams Tackles and 10 Defensive Tackles. Mathieu Boulay of Magog, Que., made his first career tackle last Sunday against Winnipeg.
TODAY IN GAITERS HISTORY: On September 10, 1988, the Gaiter defeated the Concordia Stingers 23-17 in the opening game of the OQIFC season. Steve Zatylny led the Gaiters with a pair of touchdown catches, with Pat Gregory scoring the other Bishop’s major and three conversions and two singles by Simon Restall rounded out the Gaiter scoring. The Gaiters led 22-3 after three quarters, but held off a fourth-quarter Concordia comeback to take the win at Bishop’s Field (now Coulter Field). Mike Pillo went 11-for-18 for 164 yards with three touchdown passes, while Keith Kelly carried 18 times for 101 yards. The 1988 Gaiters went 6-1 on their way to the Dunsmore Cup, but fell to Saint Mary’s in the Atlantic Bowl.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters head out east next week, as they face the Mount Allison Mounties in their only interlock match of the season. Kickoff at MacAulay Field in Sackville, N.B. is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 17.

The 42nd Annual Red & Blue Bowl will be contested on
Saturday (Sept. 10) when the York University Lions football team
faces off against the cross-town rival Toronto Varsity Blues at
York Stadium.
Kick-off for the game is 1pm and tickets can be purchased at the
gate. Live streaming is available at http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2852/.
The game will also be broadcast by Rogers TV Toronto and aired on
Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2pm. Concessions and the beer tent will be open
at 11:30am.
City bragging rights are on the line for both teams as they
compete for the Argo Cup, which will be presented to the winning
team at the conclusion of the game. In addition to the on-field
action, fans will be treated to pre-game live music by The Apollo
Effect and the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a free
42nd Annual Red & Blue Bowl t-shirt. Contests, promotions and
giveaways will also take place throughout the game.
Since their first meeting in 1970, the Varsity Blues hold the upper
hand with a 25-16-0 head-to-head record over the Lions. Toronto has
won the last three games between the two teams and prior to that,
the Lions edged out a 21-20 victory in 2007 to cap a 13-game
winning streak in the series.
Both squads enter the contest looking for their first win of the
season. The Lions were defeated by the visiting Laurier Golden
Hawks 46-7 in their home opener last weekend while the Varsity
Blues dropped a 38-5 decision to the Windsor Lancers on the
road.
Last year's game at Varsity Centre was a thriller, with the Varsity
Blues ultimately holding on for a 24-19 victory despite a 16-point
fourth quarter for the Lions that nearly gave them the win. The
Varsity Blues held a 21-3 lead at the end of the third quarter and
appeared to be cruising to the finish line. The Lions outscored the
Blues 16-3 in the final frame to make the game interesting but
couldn't close the gap entirely before time ran out.
Tickets for York students are free. Other ticket prices include $8
for adults and $5 for non-York students and seniors, while children
12 and under are also free.
The game is the Lions last at home before hitting the road for the
first time next weekend against the Waterloo Warriors. They will
return home again the following week for Homecoming 2011 against
the Queen's Gaels.

Week 1 Victory: Western welcomed the Waterloo football program
back into the OUA after its one-year selfimposed
withdrawal from competition with an 86-22 win over the Warriors on
home turf at TD Waterhouse
Stadium on Monday night. A capacity crowd of 10,500 watched as the
Mustangs offense proved too much for the
Warriors inexperienced defense to handle, amassing 624 yards of
total offense.
School and OUA Records: The 86 points scored by the Mustangs set a
new school record for most points
scored in a single game. The previous record was set last season in
a 76-0 win at York. Mustangs’ placekicker
Lirim Hajrullahu also set a new OUA record for most converts in a
single game with 11. The previous record of 10
was held by four players, most recently tied by Dan Village
(Queen’s vs. York, Oct. 4, 2008).
Ground Attack: Week one’s game against Waterloo showcased
the strength and depth of the Mustangs’ running
game this season. The team rushed for a total of 499 yards as four
Mustangs averaged over 10 yards per carry:
Tyler Varga (13.3 Avg., 3 TD, 80 yards) Donnie Marshall (12.9 Avg.,
90 yards), Nathan Riva (12.5 Avg., 2 TD, 25
yards), Garret Sanvido (10.8 Avg., 1 TD, 146 yards), while John
Leckie added 115 yards on the ground, an
average of 9.6 yards per carry, and scoring two touchdowns.

with McMaster right behind at #3.
Versus the Marauders: Western owns a 38-14-1 lead in the
all-time series versus McMaster, including two
victories last season: The Mustangs were victorious 34-28 in the
OUA Semifinal and 50-19 in the regular season
over the Marauders. This is Western’s first trip to Ron Joyce
Stadium since 2007 when the Marauders topped the
Mustangs 22-15.
McMaster and Western face off in week one of University Rush on The Score
By OUA Communications
HAMILTON, Ont. – Two of the top three teams in the country collide this weekend on University Rush, live on The Score. The No. 2 Western Mustangs travel to McMaster, to take on the No. 3 Marauders in front of a sold-out Ron Joyce Stadium crowd on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m. ET. This game, presented by Pioneer Energy, marks the kick-off of the tenth season of University Rush on The Score.
The Mustangs are fresh off a record-breaking defeat of the Waterloo Warriors. In the offensive showcase the Mustangs exploded for 86 points, putting them just four points shy of the OUA record set by Laurier in 1974.
Rookie Tyler Varga (Cambridge, Ont.) had an incredible debut for the Mustangs, managing 80 yards on six carries and tallying three touchdowns. Senior running back and CFL prospect Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) generated two touchdowns and John Leckie (North Bay, Ont.) ran for 115 yards, adding two touchdowns of his own. Altogether, the Mustangs accumulated 499 rushing yards.
Donnie Marshall (London, Ont.) led the offensive unit throwing
14-24 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall also flushed the
pocket for seven carries, accumulating 90 rushing yards.
With the offense strutting their stuff, the performance of the
Mustangs’ defensive unit got swept under the rug. After week
one the Mustangs have just the eighth best pass defence after
giving up two touchdowns and 322 yards of pass offense by Waterloo.
At the same time, Western boasts the best rushing defence as they
held their opponent to just 11 yards rushing.
Head coach Greg Marshall was confident coming out of his
team’s first game, saying “We have no real adjustments
to make. It’s early in the season and you’re always
going to have mental and communication issues. We sorted those out
in week one and look forward to the upcoming challenge.”
No doubt this weekend’s feature, presented by Pioneer Energy,
will be a 180 degree turn for the Mustangs.
The McMaster Marauders come into this weekend 1-0 as well, in
arguably a more meaningful game. For the first time since 2003, the
Marauders defeated the Queen’s Gaels on Queen’s turf,
beating them in a decisive 26-2 fashion. The only points
Queen’s managed were when McMaster conceded a safety, which
speaks volumes to the Marauder defence. Ryan Chmielewski (St.
Catharines, Ont.) recorded five solo tackles and two assists,
putting the highly touted line backer on top of the Marauder
defence.
Ben D’Aguilar (Hamilton, Ont.) opened the scoring for the
Marauders with a 57-yard run off an interception. Tyler Crapigna
(Nepean, Ont.) returned to the field after his 2010 season was
ended due to injury, and proceeded to remind the Marauders why they
had missed him. He scored 14 points, converting four field goals on
six attempts, and adding two extra points to be the game’s
high-scorer.
McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) passed for
349 yards against Queen’s to lead the league after week one.
He connected for one touchdown with Jarred Jones (Scarborough,
Ont.) and picked up 36 yards rushing.
When asked about the implications of Saturday’s matchup,
Marauders head coach Stefan Ptaszek tried to keep things in
perspective by saying, “Rankings are a nice side story but at
the end of the day this isn’t playoffs. It’s not
do-or-die and we’re trying to keep everyone here
grounded.”
Coach is right, it’s still early in the 2011 OUA football
season, but this game promises to be a highlight. Can McMaster
avenge their 2010 semi-final loss? Can Western overcome a packed
Mac house? Will it be Quinlan or Marshall to emerge as the
quarterback to beat? Watch as these questions are answered Saturday
at 1 p.m. ET on University Rush on The Score, presented by Pioneer
Energy.

The Gryphons will face the Waterloo Warriors this Saturday (Sept. 10) at 1:00 p.m. in Waterloo in the second week of OUA football action.
Both teams dropped their opening game matchup and will be looking to even their records at 1-1. Guelph faced a tough Ottawa squad, falling 35-8 in their first game, while Waterloo was blown out by Western by a final score of 86-22.
Guelph will be looking to rebound after last week’s humbling defeat, and will be facing a similar team in Waterloo that should make for a highly competitive matchup.
The game will be the Warriors annual “Black and Gold Day” which is expected to draw large crowds of frosh and community, featuring the grand re-opening of Warrior Field after the installation of field turf.
If you can’t make the game watch the LIVE webcast via the Sports Streaming Network (SSN) www.ssncanada.ca
What to Look for: Gryphon’s Offense
Guelph showed in their opening game that they have no problem
taking to the air. Quarterback Chris Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.)
threw for 201 yards in the opener, hitting on a number of different
receivers in the process. Look for the Gryphon’s to stick to
the air, as the Gryphon rushing game had almost no effect in the
opener. With the wealth of talent Guelph has at wide receiver,
expect the Gryphon’s to stretch the field and challenge the
Waterloo secondary.
What to Look for: Gryphon’s Defence
Guelph’s tandem of linebacker Jake Reinhart (Guelph, Ont.)
and defensive back Jordan Duncan (Grimsby, Ont.) led the
Gryphon’s defence with 11 and 10.5 tackles respectively in
Monday’s opener. Both have a nose for the ball and stepped up
against the potent GeeGee’s offense. Expect the turnover
differential to be a major aspect of their matchup against
Waterloo. Whichever team comes out on top in turnovers has a very
good chance at winning the game.
What to Look for: Warriors Offense
Waterloo showed they have no problem throwing the ball, even
against the tough defence of Western, so expect both teams to
utilize their air attack on Saturday afternoon. Waterloo
quarterback Evan Martin is currently third in the CIS in passing
yards, and his 42 attempts last week show that the Warriors trust
in his arm to get them through games. Waterloo’s lead
receiver, Dustin Zender, is currently tops in receiving yards,
racking up an impressive 188 yards in just one game. Expect Zender
to be a major focal point for the Gryphon’s to key in on.
What to Look for: Warriors Defence
Waterloo linebacker Corey Dawson leads the CIS in tackles at 11,
tied with Guelph’s Jake Reinhart. Expect for the Waterloo
defence to be in attack mode after failing to create any turnovers
against Western in their opener. The Warriors also gave up nearly
500 yards rushing, so expect that to be a focal point in the
Gryphon’s offense.

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels' (0-1) season got off to a slow start on Labour Day with a 26-2 loss at the hands of the No. 3 McMaster Marauders (1-0). With a short week ahead of them the Gaels' focus will shift to the first of three September road games this Saturday when they head to Frank Clair Stadium to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees (1-0).
The game will be the 95th time the Gaels and Gee-Gees square off since their first matchup in 1889. The Gee-Gees lead the series with an all-time record of 48-43-3. The Gaels haven't had to travel to Frank Clair Stadium since 2009 when they beat the Gee-Gees by a 20-8 score.
The Gaels struggled to produce consistent offence in their home
opener despite strong performances on defence and special teams.
Osie Ukwuoma of Mississauga, Ont. further solidified his place
amongst Gaels greats as his sack of McMaster's Kyle Quinlan of
South Woodslee, Ont. moved him into second place on the Gaels' sack
leaderboard. Joshua Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont. also forced an
interception in the first quarter for the Gaels defence.
Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. made his debut as the starting
quarterback for the Gaels and finished with 13 completions on 32
attempts, amassing 152-yards and two interceptions. Last season's
starting quarterback Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C. was
solid in his debut as a receiver making five catches for 64 yards
and rushing the ball 26 yards on four attempts. Chapdelaine also
contributed with his arm when he converted a pass for 13-yards on a
hitch-and-pitch play.
The Gee-Gees did not have any difficulty in their Labour Day game
against the Guelph Gryphons as they came away with a 35-8 victory
on the road. Aaron Colbon of Ottawa had a successful debut in the
starting role as he threw for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns in
the victory. Fellow Ottawa native Brendan Gillanders added 186
yards rushing and a touchdown to the Gee-Gees offence.
In their last meeting, the then-No.2 Gee-Gees narrowly edged the Gaels at Richardson Stadium by a 27-25 score in overtime. Chapdelaine led the Gaels attack with 335 yards passing for Queen's and Giovanni Aprile of Toronto posted 179 yards receiving as well as the Gaels' lone receiving touchdown of the game. The loss was the Gaels' first at Richardson Stadium since September 29, 2007.
Saturday's game in Ottawa will be a homecoming of sorts for the Gaels' Ottawa natives Stephen Laporte and Matthew Lapointe as well as linebacker Sam Sabourin who is from nearby Stittsville, Ont. Of the three only Laporte, a fifth year linebacker, has made the trip to Ottawa before in his career.
Kickoff between the Gaels and Gee-Gees is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
