TORONTO (CFL) - University of Saskatchewan safety Bryce McCall knows all too well that finesse isn't the best aspect of his game. Rather, the 23-year old Regina native prefers to do things on the football field in a more intense fashion.
"I'd say it's gritty, or as I like to call it - fast," said McCall at CFL Evaluation Camp presented by Reebok in March.
Heading into the 2012 Canadian Draft on May 3, McCall has been considered by scouts and coaches alike to be a premiere defensive prospect. And his numbers certainly reinforce that notion.
In his final season with the Huskies in 2011, McCall finished second on the team with 29 tackles in eight games, tacking on one sack for good measure as well.
However, one area where McCall has begun to make a name for himself on the football field is as a ball-hawk. Last season, the six-foot, 200-pound, McCall registered a team-best three interceptions, giving him 19 throughout his entire collegiate career.
"I think I'm a ball-hawk," said McCall regarding his style of play. "All those things, I think make me a very complete player," he added.
"But more than anything, I think I just love having fun out there. That, to me, is the most important part."
During his two days at E-Camp, McCall - the eighth ranked prospect on January's CFL Scouting Bureau rankings - continued to impress scouts with his on and off-field abilities.
He finished second among all defensive backs with 20 reps on the bench press - finishing two behind his Saskatchewan teammate Keenan MacDougall.
"I feel pretty good about (my performance). Me and Keenan (MacDougall) have been practicing quite a bit and we both felt it was one of our strengths," said McCall moments after his bench press performance.
All that's left for McCall is draft day. And he knows that regardless of where he might land up, he's going to do everything he can to ensure he'll be on a CFL field come kickoff weekend.
"It's going to be pretty special," he said.
