MONTREAL - The RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) is pleased to announce its 2011 university football all-star team.
A total of seven players were unanimous selections as all-stars by the head coaches of the RSEQ university football league head coaches including Laval running back Sébastien Lévesque (Brossard, Que.) and safety Jonathan Laliberté (Varennes, Que.), wide receiver Simon Charbonneau-Campeau (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.), linebacker Kevin Régimbald (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) and kicker William Dion (Drummondville, Que.) of the Sherbrooke Vert & Or as well as record-setting linebacker Max Caron (Kingston, Ont.) and kick return specialist Kris Robertson (Pickering, Ont.) of the Concordia Stingers.
Caron makes his first career RSEQ all-star team appearance after establishing three new conference records in 2011. He set new marks after picking off three passes for touchdowns, set the career RSEQ record with four interception returns for a touchdown and is the all-time single season leader with 78.5 tackles. Fellow Stinger Kris Robertson returned 57 punts for 597 yards this season including a pair of touchdowns, while adding another 440 yards on 18 kickoffs. Sébastien Lévesque ran for an impressive 1059 yards and 10 touchdowns on 132 carries this season en route to his second consecutive all-star team appearance, while teammate Jonathan Laliberté had four interceptions and 20 tackles this season.
The 2010 Jeff Russell Trophy winner as the RSEQ’s most outstanding player, Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, earns his third consecutive all-star nod by hauling in 53 catches for 854 yards and eight touchdowns this season. His teammate Kevin Régimbald had three sacks, 40 solo tackles and 15 assists while forcing two fumbles. For his part, Sherbrooke kicker William Dion is a first-time all-star after booting 17 of the 20 field goals he attempted this season.
The RSEQ will announce its major award winners and nominees for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) honours on Monday November 7 at 11 am during the conference’s annual awards media conference at Tomlinson Hall on the campus of McGill University.
27 of the 29 all-stars will be in action this weekend during the RSEQ Dunsmore Cup semi-finals as the regular season champion Laval Rouge et Or host the Concordia Stingers (webcast: www.radio-canada.ca/sports) while the Sherbrooke Vert & Or host their first playoff game since returning to competition in 2003 when they face the Montreal Carabins (TV: Radio-Canada). Both games kickoff at 1 pm.
