OUA football records chase

HAMILTON, Ont. – As the final week of football action is upon us, the OUA reflects back on new records set through the first seven weeks of action and who to keep your eyes on in the season’s final weekend.
 
TEAM SCORING
 
Most Points in a Game – One Team: The Western Mustangs now rank 2nd all-time after their 86 point performance against the Waterloo Warriors on opening weekend on September 5, 2011.
 
Most Points in a Game – Both Teams: The Western Mustangs and Waterloo Warriors teamed up for 108 points on September 5, 2011 to rank them 2nd all-time in the OUA.
 
SCORING
 
Most Touchdowns in a Season: Western’s Tyler Varga (Kitchener, Ont.) is approaching an appearance on the top five OUA records list with 15 touchdowns. He is one shy of fifth place all-time and six back of the all-time record set by Jesse Lumsden in 2004 with 21 touchdowns.
 
Most Points in a Career: Queen’s kicker Dan Village (Abbotsford, B.C.) has entered the OUA records list as he sits fourth on the all-time points list. He currently has 317 points which is also good for eighth all-time in the CIS.
 
Most Field Goals in a Career: Ottawa’s Matthew Falvo (Welland, Ont.) has moved into fourth place in the OUA records book for the most field goals in a career with 54. Dan Village of Queen’s is hot on his heels as Village now has 50 career field goals.
 
Most Converts in a Game: Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu (St. Catharines, Ont.) from Western owns the new all-time OUA record for converts in a single game with 11. His record-setting performance came September 5, 2011 against Waterloo. Four players were tied with the previous record of 10.
 
TEAM RUSHING
 
Most Yards Rushing in a Season: The Western Mustangs are 173 yards shy of a top five OUA record appearance. The team currently sits at 2,179 rushing yards on the year and are on the verge of catching Laurier’s 1973 mark of 2,352 yards.
 
TEAM PASSING
 
Most Pass Attempts in a Season: The Waterloo Warriors are 25 pass attempts shy of a top five OUA record for the most attempts in a season. The Warriors currently have 298 pass attempts and are 48 attempts from the all-time record of 346 set by Queen’s in 2003.
 
PASSING
 
Most TD Passes in a Season: Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) trails the all-time record of 24 touchdown passes in a season set by Tommy Denison (2003) and Dan Brannagan (2008) by just four. His 20 touchdown passes to date puts him in a tie for fifth all-time in the OUA.
 
Most Passes Attempted in a Game: Shane Kelly of Laurier moved into fifth all-time in the OUA with his 55 pass attempts on September 19, 2011 against Queen’s.
 
MISCELLANEOUS
 
Most Penalty Yardage in a Game – One Team: The McMaster Marauders smashed the all-time record for penalty yards in a single game as they racked up 327 yards against Waterloo on October 1, 2011. The previous record was 239 set in 2001 by Windsor.
 
RECEIVING
 
Most Receptions in a Season: Waterloo’s Dustin Zender (Kitchener, Ont.) has moved himself into a tie for third all-time in the OUA with 57 receptions this season. Zender is just six receptions behind the all-time record of 63 held by Craig Spear from Queen’s in 2003.
 
Most Receptions in a Career: Dustin Zender is also creeping up the all-time list in career receptions. His 140 catches is 13 shy of a top five OUA record.
 
Most TD Receptions in a Season: Matt Peressini (Ancaster, Ont.) of McMaster is three receiving touchdowns shy of an OUA top five record. He heads into the final week of regular season play with eight TD receptions.
 
Most TD Receptions in a Career: McMaster’s Matt Peressini is also making waves on the all-time career list as he is four touchdowns shy of an OUA top five record. He currently has 18 career touchdown receptions.
 
DEFENCE
 
Longest Interception Return: Matt McGarva (Surrey, B.C.) of the Windsor Lancers left his mark on the record books when he returned an interception for 109 yards on October 1, 2011 against Guelph. The return puts McGarva into a tie for the fourth longest interception return in OUA history.
 
KICKING AND PUNTING
 
Most Yards Punting in a Season: York Lions kicker Dror David (Richmond Hill, Ont.) is on pace to add his name to the OUA records list. He currently has 2,908 punting yards through seven games. With an average of 415 yards per game, he could finish the season in third place all-time.
 
KICK AND PUNT RETURNS
 
Most Punt Return Yards in a Career: Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks broke the OUA all-time career punt return yards record on October 1, 2011 against Ottawa, surpassing Don Hollerhead’s mark of 1,886 career yards. Heap currently boasts 2,041 career yards and looks to extend his record in the final week. Heap also sits third all-time in the CIS and is just the third player to break the 2,000 yard barrier.
 
Longest Kickoff Return: Giovanni Aprile (Toronto, Ont.) of the Queen’s Gaels put together a 109 yard kickoff return on October 15, 2011 to put him into a tie for the fourth longest kickoff return all-time in the OUA.
 
The final week of regular season play has the No. 1 Western Mustangs traveling to Kingston for a matchup with the Queen’s Gaels which will be broadcast live on The Score Television Network. The No. 5 McMaster Marauders host the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees in a battle for second place and a first round bye in the playoffs. Elsewhere, Laurier travels to Guelph, Windsor travels to Toronto for a date with the York Lions, and the Waterloo Warriors close out their season in Toronto against the Varsity Blues.
