Jerry Friesen resigns as Alberta Golden Bears football coach
EDMONTON - After 10 seasons patrolling the sidelines as head coach of the University of Alberta Golden Bears Football Program, Jerry Friesen has announced his resignation effective March 31st, 2011 in order to pursue other opportunities.
Friesen, originally from Osler, SK, was named head coach of the football program in 2001 and amassed a career conference record of 36-40, along with four playoff wins. In 2004 and 2005 he guided the Evergreen and Gold to back-to-back 7-1 seasons and two straight Canada West championship games. He was awarded the Frank Tindall Trophy as CIS football coach of the year for his efforts in 2004.
“I have resigned to pursue other opportunities. I am proud of the Golden Bears and all that we accomplished together and I am confident the U of A Golden Bears will continue to improve and achieve their goals. You will have to speak with Vang Ioannides to know the direction the club will take. When I am ready I will publicly discuss my other opportunities.”
“Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics, and the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation would like to thank Jerry Friesen for his hard work, dedication and the passion he brought to Golden Bears Football during his time as Head Coach. We wish him nothing but the best for the future,” said Vang Ioannides, Acting Director of Athletics. “Our immediate concern moving forward will be to assess our team’s needs and act accordingly. I would anticipate a further announcement in the coming week.”
