| SACKVILLE, NB - The Acadia Axeman defeated the
Mount Allison Mounties 26-19 at MacAulay Field in Sackville on
Saturday, in front of nearly 1500 spectators. The hometown crowd
was feeling good at the half as Mount Allison stormed out to an
18-1 halftime lead but Acadia used two big plays in the 2nd half to
complete the comeback and finish on top. With the win, Acadia moves
into sole possession of 1st place in the AUS at 3-2, while Mount
Allison falls to 2-3. The Mounties sit tied in 2nd place tie with
Saint Mary's.
Mount Allison opened the scoring only 3 minutes into the game when John Szilagyi scored a 39 yard field goal. Two minutes later a great catch by receiver Jarrett King brought the Mounties to the Acadia 2-yard line. On the next play, Alonzo Howell rushed for the touchdown, leaving the score at 10-0 Mount Allison. Mounties scored again before the end of the 1st quarter when Jake Hotchkiss hooked up with Adam Molnar in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard score. On the ensuing kickoff, with a strong wind at his back, Szilagyi kicked the ball through the Acadia end zone, giving Mount Allison another single point and an 18-0 lead. One minute and 18 seconds into the 2nd quarter, Acadia kicker Matt Archibald missed a field goal, leading to a rouge and single point for Acadia. Acadia started to gain momentum half way through the 3rd quarter when quarterback Kyle Graves through a lateral to receiver Stu Clow. Clow then returned the ball to Graves who took off for the sidelines and ran 61 yards for the touchdown. Mount Allison got another rouge, making the score 19-8, then with thee minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, Acadia's Naija Coley returned a punt 91 yards to bring the Axeman within four points. Acadia took the lead for the first time when Kyle Graves hooked up with Stu Clow for an 18-yard score 4 minutes into the 4th quarter, giving Acadia a 22-19 lead. Acadia added to their lead when Matt Archibald kicked a 33-yard field goal with just over 5 minutes to play, putting the score at 25-19. A rouge for Acadia made the score 26-19 with just over 2 minutes to play. Acadia failed to get their punt away with only 13 seconds remaining, giving Mount Allison one last shot from the Acadia 40-yard line. With no time left on the clock Jake Hotchkiss through to the end zone but the ball was deflected away. | WINDSOR, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers football
program returned to action Saturday afternoon in a one sided affair
against the 0-5 York Lions. Led by first year quarterback Austin
Kennedy, the Lancers offense seemed to find their rhythm, as they
cruised to a 61-15 victory.
The first quarter saw a rampant pace with a total of four turnovers between the two teams. The Lions struck first getting on the board after a 61 yard touchdown pass from Darren Frank to receiver Jonelle Tolbert just two and a half minutes into the game. The Lancers would quickly respond as Austin Kennedy would find a wide open Jordan Brescacin on a 33 yard pass to tie the game at 7-7. The first quarter ended with the Lions on top 13-7 as James Tuck recovered the ball in the Lancers end zone after fourth year linebacker Tyler De Moel blocked a punt attempt deep in Lancers territory. In the second quarter the Lancers offence took over as kicker Robert Eeuwes started the quarter off with an early field goal o bring the Lancers within four points. A few minutes later Matt Bucknor pulled down his second interception of the game to set up a 10 yard touchdown pass to Cory Fernandes to put the Lancers up 17-13. The Lancers domination continued on both sides of the ball as Kennedy found Nick Baldassi who picked up 33 yards before Paul Lefaive punched in his first touchdown of the season. The Lancers weren't done there as Coach Morencie made the call to fake the field goal and turned the play into seven points as Brescacin completed a 30 yard pass to Baldassi to put the Lancer up 33-13 with just over two minutes remaining in the half. The Lancers defense continued to come up big in the second as first year Josh Burns came up with his first interception in a Lancer uniform. This led to Cory Fernandes second touchdown of the afternoon as he broke through the York defense to muscle his way in on a 22 yard pass. The Lancer defense also got involved in the scoring in the second half as Udoka Nwaesei and A.J Langlois both took York turn over's back for touchdowns. Greg Orsini would later find Mitch Atkinson for his first touchdown as the Lancers closed the game out with a big 61-15 victory. Kennedy finished the game 16 for 22 good enough for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Fernandes led the Lancers with 3 catches for 46 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Lancers hit the road next week to take on the Guelph Gryphon's on Saturday October 16th at 1pm, before returning home for their final game of the 2010 regular season on October 23rd against the Laurier Golden Hawks. | OTTAWA - The no. six nationally ranked University
of Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-1) downed the no. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden
Hawks (3-3) 44-21 in front of 1,296 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.
Quarterback Brad Sinopoli led the garnet-and-grey to 524 yards of offence through his 18 completions for 309 yards and three majors. The veteran quarterback closed in on the national record of 3,033 passing yards in a season set last year by Michael Faulds as he brought his total up to 2,552. The Golden Hawks opened scoring in the game after Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) forced a fumble on Sinopoli and starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) rushed twice before Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his second touchdown of the year. That would be the last lead the purple-and-gold would hold in the game. Ottawa scored three majors and five field goals throughout the balance of the contest while the Hawks only added two touchdowns. "We beat ourselves today," said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. "Our kicking game was as bad as I've seen it and we couldn't generate any offence. Sinopoli is as good there is and we hung in there as long as we could." Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) had some trouble getting kicks off because of some short snaps. The result was often hurried or in a couple of cases, an attempted rush as a result of the coverage. Laurier was 0-for-3 on third down conversions in the game. Pawliuk finished the first half of the game going 6-for-13 for 31 yards before Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) stepped into the pivot role and completed 11 of 22 for 152 yards including the only passing major of the contest for the Golden Hawks. Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) picked up the most yardage as he caught three passes for 63 yards. Laurier's defence was led by captain Mitchell Bosch (Langley, BC) who had 7.5 tackles (6 solo, 3 assisted), Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) with seven (6 solo, 2 assisted) and Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) with seven (5 solo, 4 assisted) a knockdown and a fumble. "In the first half I've never been apart of a better defensive football game," said Patrick McGarry (Waterdown, Ont.) who had two big knockdowns as well as a fumble recovery and three tackles. "I thought we did a great job but sometimes things go a little sour and you just need to bounce back." Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) claimed top spot in the Laurier record books for kick returns in a career. The veteran returner added 86 yards on four carries to bring his overall total to 731. | KINGSTON, Ont. – Justin Chapdelaine of
Abbotsford, Ont., threw for 284 yards and six touchdowns, while
adding another on the ground, as the Queen's Gaels routed the
Toronto Varsity Blues 66-1 on Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
The win lifts the Gaels to a 2-4 record and into a tie with the Varsity Blues in the OUA standings. It also gives Queen's the tiebreaker over Toronto in the OUA playoff race. The victory is also the 100th career regular season win for Queen's Head Coach Pat Sheahan. 52 of those 100 victories have come during his 11-year career with the Gaels. Chapdelaine's six touchdowns in the air are the most in the Gaels history and it ranks him eighth on the CIS single game records list tied with 19 others. "We had a great start and that's what we needed," said Chapdelaine. "A couple games we haven't played great in the second half. I felt like we played great throughout the entire game. We had a great 60 minutes of football today." The second-year quarterback had many targets throwing two touchdowns to Tomas Howes of Parham, Ont., and William vanRuyven of Port Colborne, Ont. Devan Sheahan of Kingston, Ont., and Giovanni Aprile of Toronto, also recorded a touchdown. Sheahan led all receivers with 124 yards on 10 receptions. Queen's had two 100 yard rushers in the game with Jimmy Therrien of Montreal and Ryan Granberg cracking the 100 yard mark. Therrien played the majority of the game tallying 23 carries, 127 yards and one touchdown. Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., who relieved Therrien late had the longest run in the game with a 96 yard touchdown at 10:06 of the fourth quarter. Granberg finished with 167 yards and one touchdown. Toronto struggled offensively tallying only six first downs the entire day. Overall they managed just 170 offensive yards. Varsity Blues' Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont., was 11 for 24 with 88 yards and three interceptions. CIS rookie of the year candidate Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont., led the Gaels defence with 10.5 tackles and an interception. Stephen Laporte of Ottawa, also had an interception in the win. "Definitely It was a must win game," said fourth-year Matt O'Donnell of Kingston, Ont. "We had to make sure we beat these guys so that we have the head to head line up if we have the same record at the end of the year." The game was filled with a number of career firsts for a variety of players. On defence, Sabourn and Paul Hutchinson of Hamilton each recorded their first career interceptions. Granberg had is first 100-yard career rushing game while vanRuyven tallied his first career touchdown. NOTES: Sabourin currently leads the CIS with 49 tackles which is a half tackle over Toronto's Wilkerson DeSouza of Mississauga, Ont... DeSouza is in his third season with the Varsity Blues. | The Concordia Stingers defence forced eight
turnovers en route to a 21-11 victory over the McGill Redmen in
Montreal on Saturday afternoon.
The Stingers were trailing 11-8 heading into the fourth quarter, but the defence stepped up forcing four turnovers – one led to the winning touchdown and one snuffed out a last-minute McGill drive. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Stinger defensive tackle Maurice Forbes hit McGill running back Taylor Kuprowski who coughed up the ball. Linebacker Alexandre Lemire recovered the ball, setting up the Stingers on the McGill 29-yard line. Shortly after rookie slotback Michael Harrington caught a 13-yard TD pass to put Concordia out in front 14-11 – a lead the team would ride to victory. Running back Mike Donnelly scampered into the end zone on a seven-yard run to pad the Stingers' lead with six minutes left to play. The Redmen's final turnover came with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Fourth-year cornerback Kyle Smith intercepted a Ryne Bondy pass on the Concordia six-yard line. It halted a nine-play, 62-yard drive that had McGill on Concordia's 13-yard line. Concordia's offence rolled up 16 first downs and 158 yards on the day. McGill had 22 first downs and 350 yards of offence. Stinger quarterback Terrance Morsink completed 14 of 31 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball four times for 49 yards and a TD on a two-yard run at 13:44 of the second quarter. He scored Concordia's only points in the first half. The Stingers had a halftime lead of 7-5. McGill's only touchdown came on a one-yard run by Kuprowski at 9:11 of the third quarter. He carried the ball 27 times for 110 yards. He also had three fumbles. With a 3-3 win-loss record, the Stingers are still in playoff contention. The Redmen fall to 0-6. Concordia travels to Sherbrooke next Saturday to face the 2-4 Vert & Or. MONTREAL - Fourth year wide receiver Julian Feoli Gudino (San José, Costa Rica) made four catches for 112 yards including the game winning 10-yard touchdown reception with 4:17 to play in the third quarter as the no. 1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or came from behind to defeat the no. 7 Montreal Carabins 19-12 in Quebec University Football League (QUFL) action on Saturday.
Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 5166 fans on their home turf of CEPSUM Stadium, the Carabins came out gunning for the defending conference champions and took a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter when pivot Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze (Repentigny, Que.) hooked up with Djems Kouamé (Montreal) on a 19-yard touchdown toss with 8:04 to play in the half.
After a rouge extended Montreal's lead to 11-3, veteran kicker Christopher Milo (Montreal) began the Laval comeback with a 30-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the opening half.
The Carabins conceded a safety early in the second half cutting their advantage to three points.
At 10:43 of the third period, Laval quarterback Bruno Prud'homme (Lasalle, Que.) found Feoli Guidino open for a 10-yard score to give Laval the lead for good. Prud'homme would finish the game completed 10 of the 17 passes he attemped for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Nadeau-Piuze finished the contest 20 of 41 for 245 yards with a touchdown and one interception.
For the second straight game, Montreal running back Rotrand Sené was held to 110 yards or less in rushing, completing the afternoon with just 97 yards on 22 carries.
With the win, the Rouge et Or remain undefeated, improving their record to 6-0 while the Carabins drop to third place in the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) with a 4-2 record.
Laval will put its perfect record on the line next Sunday (October 17) when they host the second place Bishop's Gaiters (5-1) at PEPS Stadium, while Montreal takes on the winless McGill Redmen (0-6) at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday.
