QUEBEC – Making his first career start, sophomore quaterback Tristan Grenon (Quebec City) completed 20-of-30 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown, while rookie running back Maxime Béland (Neuville, Que.) rushed for another as the Laval Rouge et Or (4-0) defeated the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (1-3) 23-7 Sunday in front of 15,126 fans at PEPS Stadium.
With the win, the Rouge et Or keep pace with the Montreal Carabins (4-0) atop the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) standings, while Sherbrooke is fifth one game back of the Concordia Stingers for the final playoff berth in the conference.
Laval took an 8-0 lead into half-time as a result of a pair of Christopher Milo (Montreal) field goals from 40 and 25-yards and a conceded safety.
Béland scored the first major of the ball game 5:32 into the third quarter with a two-yard scamper to extend Laval's lead to 15-0. The Rouge et Or would widen their margin to 22-0 when Patrick Lavoie hauled in a six-yard touchdown toss from Grenon capping a two-play, 37-yard drive 6:13 into the final period.
Francis Maheu accounted for Sherbrooke's lone score of the game, a 33-yard touchdown reception from fifth year quarterback Jean-Philippe Shoiry with 3:25 remaining in the game. Shoiry finished the game 18-of-39 for 220 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions.
Laval will look to remain perfect when it hosts the Concordia Stingers (2-2) next Sunday, while the Vert & Or head to Molson Stadium on Saturday as they face the last place McGill Redmen in a game that will be broadcast live on Radio-Canada.
