FRC - CIS football players of the week (#3): McConkey, Noble, Anderson honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Regina wide receiver Mark McConkey, Calgary defensive back Tye Noble and McGill kicker Austin Anderson are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 18, 2010.
 
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
 
McConkey, a third-year kinesiology and health studies student from Calgary, was honoured on offence after he set career highs with 13 receptions and 154 receiving yards last Saturday to lead the No. 6 Rams (2-1) to a crucial 37-26 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies (1-2), who were themselves ranked sixth in the nation heading into the contest. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior caught over half of Marc Mueller’s 25 completions on the day including a six-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. McConkey is just the fourth Canada West player since 1981 to have 13 catches or more in a game and fell two receptions short of the single-game conference record set by former Regina teammate Chad Goldie in 2007.
 
Mount Allison wide receiver Gary Ross, Montreal running back Rotrand Sené and Ottawa receiver Cyril Adjeitey were also up for the award.
 
Noble, a third-year arts and science student from Winnipeg, took home the weekly honour on defence after he scored the winning touchdown on a 45-yard interception return with 6:03 left in a 23-14 road victory over provincial rival and No. 7-ranked Alberta (2-1), on Saturday. The 6-foot, 195-pound junior, whose major – followed by a two-point conversion – made it 20-14 Calgary, also had seven solo tackles and a half sack in the comeback win that lifted the No. 4 Dinos (2-1) into a tie for first place in the Canada West standings with Alberta and No. 6 Regina.
St. Francis Xavier defensive back Raye Hartmann, Laval linebacker Frédérick Plesius and Toronto lineman Adam Fehler were also nominated.
 
Anderson, a third-year finance student from Canmore, Alta., was the choice on special teams after he tied a single-game school record set back in 1984 with six field goals, including three kicks of over 40 yards, in a heartbreaking 34-29 Redmen (0-3) loss to cross-town rival Concordia (2-1), last Friday night. The 21-year-old junior, who connected from 46, 27, 12, 48, 18 and 42 yards on the evening, came to within one FG of tying the single-match conference mark but missed from 55 yards out – which would have been the second longest FG in CIS history - and saw a 45-yard attempt hit the uprights. 
 
Kick returners Dylan Hollohan of StFX and Chayce Elliott of Ottawa and Calgary kicker Aaron Ifield were also up for the distinction.

The Football Reporters of Canada – University Division represents journalists and broadcasters in every region of the country covering CIS Football. Since 1958 the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) have been an organization of media members who have covered the Canadian Football League, serving to select the league’s outstanding players, coach-of-the-year and all-star teams through voting conducted by its members. In 2009, the FRC amalgamated with the University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC) to give the organization greater scope in its affiliation with amateur and college football.
 
The FRC also works with the CFL and CIS to establish guidelines and working conditions for the men and women who report on the game. Selected members of the FRC also help to choose builders, players and media members for induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
