Records chase update (#2): FitzGibbon to resume TD record chase
OTTAWA (CIS) – Guelph running back Nick FitzGibbon is
among a number of players who will be looking to resume their climb
up various career leader lists when the CIS football schedule
resumes this weekend.
FitzGibbon, a fifth-year senior from Puslinch, Ont., found the end
zone three times in the Gryphons’ first two games of the
season against Toronto and York to bring his career total to 40
all-purpose touchdowns (22 rushing, 18 receiving), good for a tie
for seventh place on the all-time CIS list.
FitzGibbon and the undefeated Gryphons (2-0) enjoyed a bye last
week and are back in action Saturday when they host defending
Vanier Cup champion Queen’s (1-1) at 1 p.m. (live on The
Score). The Guelph standout will start the contest only one major
back of former Waterloo running back Mike Bradley and ex-Western
receiver Andy Fantuz, and 11 back of national record-holder Paul
Brule, who starred for StFX in the 1960s.
Other players to keep an eye on this weekend include receivers
Charles-Antoine Sinotte of McGill and Gary Ross of Mount Allison,
as well as kickers Christopher Milo of Laval and Aaron Ifield of
Calgary.
Sinotte, in his fifth campaign with the Redmen (0-2), became the
first player in CIS history to reach the 200-reception plateau on
Sept. 5 during McGill’s opener at Laval. The
Trois-Rivières, Que., native has 214 career catches going
into a Friday night affair against cross-town rival Concordia
(1-1).
Ross could move up the all-time leaders list in a number of
categories Friday evening when the Mounties (1-0) visit Sherbrooke
(0-2). The fifth-year veteran from Windsor, Ont., has 178 career
receptions and needs seven more to tie Ottawa’s Chris Evraire
(185) for fifth place, eight catches to join Laurier’s Stefan
Ptaszek (186) in fourth position and 11 grabs to catch Fantuz (189)
for third all-time.
The CIS active leader in both receiving yards (2,640 – 12th
all-time) and punt-return yards (1,729 - 8th all-time), Ross needs
43 yards through the air to move into the national Top 10 and 38
yards on punt returns to climb into sixth place in that
category.
Milo, in his fourth season with the top-ranked Rouge et Or (2-0),
is the CIS active leader with 292 career points (12th all-time) and
could become the seventh player in history to reach the 300-point
mark on Saturday when Laval visits Saint Mary’s (0-1) in
interlock action (1 p.m. Eastern / 2 p.m. Atlantic, live on SRC
& EastLink). The Montreal native is also second among active
players and 20th on the all-time list with 51 field goals, only
five out of the Top 10.
Ifield, a fifth-year senior from Saskatoon, is the CIS active
leader with 56 field goals, good for a tie for eighth place
all-time. He could catch former OUA stars Rob Maver of Guelph (57)
and Michael Ray of McMaster (59) and even become the sixth kicker
in history to reach the 60-FG plateau when the No. 4 Dinos (1-1)
visit No. 7 Alberta (2-0) Saturday afternoon.
NOTES... Ross holds the AUS conference records for most receptions,
receiving yards and punt-return yards in a career... Milo needs
only two points to break the Quebec career mark of 293 set by
McGill kicker Anand Pillai from 1999 to 2003... FitzGibbon is seven
all-purpose touchdowns short of the OUA career record set by
McMaster’s Jesse Lumsden from 2001 to
2004...
