Manitoba football forfeits two games, one declared "no contest"

EDMONTON - The Canada West Universities Athletic Association announces that due to an eligibility violation, the official results of three football games played by the University of Manitoba have been overturned.

It has been determined that the Manitoba used an ineligible student-athlete for its first five games of the season. The student-athlete in question was not in compliance with a CIS eligibility regulation that limits students to five years of eligibility.

As per Canada West bylaws (see Article 6 on Page 33), the use of an ineligible player results in forfeiture of games in which the student-athlete was deemed ineligible. The two games won by Manitoba over UBC and Alberta have been changed to losses and wins for the two opponents. The third game, Manitoba at Simon Fraser has been declared "no contest" because both teams used an ineligible player. The final scores for the two forfeited games are recorded as 1-0 forfeits by Manitoba. All statistics for the three games will remain intact.

The decision taken by Canada West impacts and changes the four-team Canada West playoff structure, with Regina replacing Manitoba. The match-ups for this Saturday are Alberta at Calgary and Regina at Saskatchewan.
