2009 QSSF football all-stars announced

MONTREAL - The Quebec Student Sport Federation (QSSF) is pleased to announce it’s 2009 university football all-star team. The all-star team is comprised of 13 members of the defending Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or, four players from the Concordia Stingers, three players from the McGill Redmen, Montreal Carabins and Sherbrooke Vert & Or respectively and a pair of Bishop’s Gaiters.

There are four unanimous choices on this year’s all-star team as selected by the six head coaches in the Quebec University Football League (QUFL). They include: Laval wide receiver Julian Feoli-Gudiño and punter Christopher Milo, Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood and Bishop’s kick return specialist Steven Turner. Quarterbacks Benoît Groulx of Laval and Concordia's Robert MacKay finish in the only tie in this year's all-star voting.

Feoli-Gudiño hauled in 34 catches for 364 yards and four touchdowns while teammate Christopher Milo provided Laval with outstanding field position averaging 40.9 yards on 67 punts this season. Linebacker Cory Greenwood led all defensive players in the QUFL this season with 62 total tackles, 52 of which were unassisted. He finished the season averaging 7.8 tackles per game. With 265 yards on 13 punt returns, Bishop’s return specialist Steven Turner was the top choice in the category as he averaged 20.4 yards per punt return during the campaign.

Record setting performances in 2009

Several members of the QUFL all-star team set new league records this season including Laval field general Benoît Groulx, Concordia pivot Robert MacKay, running back Pascal Fils of the Vert & Or and McGill receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte.

Groulx shattered the QUFL for career touchdown passes with 66 by throwing for 3 majors in Laval’s 50-0 victory over the McGill Redmen. The former mark of 63 was set a year ago by former Redmen quarterback Matt Connell.

Concordia Stingers’ quarterback Robert MacKay set the new single-season mark for the most yards passing, finishing the eight game campaign with 2739 yards, 206 more than Connell’s previous record of 2533 yards set in 2007.

Sherbrooke ball carrier Pascal Fils finished 2009 with the second most yards gained in a season, racking up 1331 yards in 8 games. He finished 133 yards shy of former Bishop’s Gaiters running back Jamal Lee’s record of 1464 yards that he established in 2007.

Charles-Antoine Sinotte became the most prolific receiver in QUFL history in week 7 as he hauled in his 195th career reception in a loss to Concordia. He added to that total in the final regular season game, making 4 catches to increase the new record to 199.
