Richard Peddie appointed to CIS board of directors
OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport president, Leo MacPherson, announced on Monday the appointment of renowned sports business leader Richard Peddie to the CIS board of directors.
Peddie joins the CIS board as its first member at large, effective immediately.
“Richard is a widely respected leader with extraordinary business and sport management expertise, and we are delighted that he is joining our board of directors,” said MacPherson. “He will provide our board and management team with new insight and perspective as we pursue exciting opportunities relating to our broadcast and media rights along with our corporate partnership initiatives.”
Peddie retired from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in 2011 after 14 years as president and chief executive officer of the organization. In that position, he oversaw all business operations related to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors, Marlies and Toronto FC, the operations of Air Canada Centre, BMO Field and Ricoh Coliseum, the company’s three digital channels – Leafs TV, Raptors NBA TV and GOLTV – as well as $500 million Maple Leaf Square, a sports and entertainment destination adjacent to Air Canada Centre.
Prior to joining MLSE, his numerous leadership positions included president and COO of NetStar Communications, president and CEO of Stadium Corporation of Ontario (SkyDome), president and CEO of Pillsbury Canada, and president of Hostess Foods. He began his business career with Colgate Palmolive in 1970.
A native of Windsor, Ont., Peddie graduated from the University of Windsor in 1970 and received an honourary doctorate from the institution in 2001. One of the University’s most philanthropic and active donors, he is a long-time supporter of Lancer Athletics and CIS. Most recently, he was co-honourary chair, along with his wife Colleen, of the 2011 CIS women’s basketball championship hosted by the University of Windsor.
Peddie is currently a leader in residence at the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business. He is also writing a book on leadership in business and sports, which will be published by HarperCollins in 2013.
“I’m very pleased to be able to assist CIS as a member of the board of directors,” Peddie said. “Most importantly, I want to help the student athletes across Canada in furthering their dreams on and off the playing field.”
