CIS championships: Calgary, Montreal announced as hosts for field hockey, swimming

OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday the host universities for its 2011 women's field hockey national tournament as well as for its next two swimming championships.

The University of Calgary will be the site of this fall's CIS field hockey tourney from November 3 to 6. The event has previously been held in Calgary twice since its inaugural edition in 1975 including in 1994 and 1982.

"We're very excited to welcome the country's top teams this fall," said Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar. "This is an important step forward for our program, and our community is eager to host this event."

Meanwhile, CIS' top swimmers will gather at the University of Montreal in the winter of 2012 (Feb. 23-25) and at the U of C in 2013 (Feb. 21-23).

Calgary first held the national meet back in 1973 and hosted again last February when the Dinos claimed their third straight women's team banner and their second consecutive men's title.

Montreal will host the meet for the second time in school history and for the first time since 1992.

"We're very excited to be able to host the country again in 2013," said Calgary's Mike Blondal, the reigning CIS men's and women's swimming coach of the year. "It will be another great opportunity for our swimmers, our university and the Calgary community to see a high-level competition."

"Hosting such a high-profile event is a golden opportunity to take the next step and position ourselves at the national level," said Manon Simard, director of the U of M varsity programs. "It is an acknowledgment by CIS that they believe we're able to stage high-quality championships."
