2013 Winter Universiade: Call for applications Canadian team mission staff
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), as the Canadian franchise
holder of the Fédération
Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) is responsible for the
coordination and entry of the Canadian team in the Universiade. CIS
is seeking two (2) experienced individuals to head the Canadian
delegation for the 25th Winter Universiade (a Chef de Mission and a
Sport Information Manager).
Where:
Maribor, Slovenia
When:
The 11-day multi winter sport event is scheduled to take place from January 30th to February 9th, 2013.
The mission staff should be prepared to arrive approximately 5 days earlier and leave 2 days after the Universiade, and also participate in all pre-event planning meetings.
What:
The Universiade is a multi-sport event that takes place every two years in various cities all over the world. The 26th Universiade in Maribor will feature over 70 medal events, encompassed in the following 11 sports:
• Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Curling, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, and Freestyle Skiing.
The main athletes’ village will be set-up in Maribor, with satellite athletes village located in Rogla (50km away).
Who:
The Universiade is open to any competitor between the ages of 17
and 28 in the year of the
Games, who are currently officially registered as proceeding
towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute
(e.g. college, CEGEP) or has graduated from a post secondary
institution within the previous year of the event. The competitor
must also be a national of the country they will represent
We anticipate a maximum team size of approximately 150 members (110 athletes and 40 support staff)
Team Canada Mission Requirements:
Candidates for the positions of Chef de Mission and Sports
Information Manager will possess
the best combination of the following:
1. Demonstrated administrative and leadership capability.
2. Availability for the duration of, and all planning meetings
prior to, the Universiade (approximately 18 days including the
period January 30 – February 9).
3. Availability to perform required duties and tasks leading up to
the Universiade.
4. Knowledge of international sport structures, policies and
protocol.
5. Experience on Games Missions or similar international or
national events (NB. Previous
Mission Staff experience is essential for the Chef de Mission
position).
6. Hold a position in university athletics, physical education, or
other university department
(preference will be given to CIS or CCAA applicants), or be a CIS
or Sport Canada staff
member.
7. Have the endorsement of their university or employer to be
selected as a member of the
mission staff.
8. Ability to work in English and French is an asset. Knowledge of
Slovenia language and
culture is also a benefit.

The CIS International Committee will review all of the applications and make recommendations to the CIS Board of Directors for ratification as follows:
Chef de Mission: March 27, 2012
Sport Information Manager: May 15, 2012
The Chef de Mission will be involved in the selection of all additional team staff.
Funding:
The positions are voluntary; there is no salary or honorarium.
Expenses for participation as a
member of the Mission will be covered by CIS subject to Sport
Canada Funding. Administrative support for the entire Mission is
provided by CIS International Programs.
Additional Information:
Gender equity, bilingual language requirements, and team
environment compatibility will be
considered. All candidates shall be subject to a screening process,
including a criminal reference and driving offence check, prior to
the confirmation of their selection.
