Call for applications Canadian xc skiing coaches & technicians 2011 winter universiade
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), as the Canadian franchise
holder of the Fédération Internationale du Sport
Universitaire (FISU) is responsible for the coordination and entry
of the Canadian team in the Universiade. CIS is seeking three (3)
experienced individual to be apart of the Canadian Cross Country
team for the 25th Winter Universiade.
Where:
25th Universiade – Erzurum, Turkey
When:
The 25th Universiade is an 11-day multi winter sport event that is
scheduled to take place from January 27th to February 6th,
2011.
The Coaches and Technicians should be prepared to arrive in Turkey
on January 23rd and leave February 7th. They should also be
prepared to participate in all pre-event sport specific team
planning
What:
The Universiade is a multi-sport event that takes place every two
years in various cities all over the world. The 25th Universiade in
Erzurum will feature over 70 medal events, encompassed in the
following 11 sports:
· Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Curling, Cross
Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed
Skating, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, and Freestyle Skiing.
The athletes’ village will be set-up in Erzurum and will host
both officials and athletes. It is ten minutes walking distance to
the city center and 10km from race events.
Term of appointment:
The successful candidates will serve in their respective positions
for the Canadian Cross Country team from April 1st, 2010 until
March 31st, 2011.
Funding: The coaching and technician positions are voluntary
positions and are completely self-funded. The approximate cost of
participation at past Universiades has been approximately $3500.
However cross-country staffs at past Universiades have generated
sponsorship funds to offset a portion of the cost.
Who:
Canada is allowed to send a maximum team size of 12 athletes (6 men
& 6 women) and 4 officials (team leader, coaches, &
technicians) to participate in the following events:
Men:
10 km Free
30 km C/mass start
Relay 4x10km
Sprint
Double pursuit 7,5km C/7,5km
Women:
5 km F
15 km C/mass start
Relay 3x5km
Sprint
Double pursuit 5km C/5km F
The Universiade is open to any competitor between the ages of 17
and 28 in the year of the Games, who is a full-time post-secondary
student (e.g. University, college, CEGEP) or has graduated from a
post secondary institution within the previous year of the
event.
We anticipate an overall Team Canada size of approximately 150
members (110 athletes and 40 support staff) for the 2011
Universiade.
Canadian Cross Country Coaches Requirements:
Candidates for the coaching positions – Cross Country will
possess the best combination of the following:
· Demonstrated administrative and leadership capability.
· Previous international experience or national team
experience as a coach/athlete Cross Country
· Previous coaching experience in other team environments
(preferably at the post secondary level) would be considered in the
assessment.
· Previously demonstrated strong communication and
administrative skills
· Proven ability to raise funds or access to individuals who
will raise funds for the project.
Canadian Cross Country Technicians Requirements:
Candidates for the technician positions – Cross Country will
possess the best combination of the following:
· Previous international experience or national team
experience as a coach/athlete/technician in Cross Country
· Previous experience in other team environments (preferably
at the post secondary level) would be considered in the
assessment.
· Previously demonstrated strong communication
· Proven ability to raise funds or access to individuals who
will raise funds for the project.
Applicants for these positions:
· Must be committed to providing a positive international
and educational sporting experience for the members of Team
Canada.
· Must be able and willing to raise funds to offset the
costs of participation. In the past coaches and staff have only
been charged only part of the approximate $3500 cost required of
the student athletes.
Selection Dates:
Selections will be made by March 5h, 2010 The selected team leader
will be involved in the selection of the team staff. Only the
successful candidates will be notified.

Applicants are requested to outline their abilities in relation to
the above in a covering letter and include a personal
résumé. All applications must be submitted as

The CIS Cross Country Coordinating Committee and selected Team
Leader will review all of the applications and make selections.
Additional Information:

be subject to a screening process, including a criminal reference
and driving offence check, prior to the confirmation of their
selection.
