QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – After battling hard in a thrilling five-set match Friday night, the seventh-seeded Western Ontario Mustangs defeated the No. 6 UNB Varsity Reds in three sets of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22 in the second consolation game of the CIS women’s volleyball championship at University Laval’s PEPS Stadium, Saturday afternoon.

The Ontario champion Mustangs, who were edged by No. 2 Trinity Western in the opening round, will face the No. 5 Montreal Carabins for fofth place in the country Sunday at 11 a.m.

For the AUS champion V-Reds, the loss marked the end of their tournament, and season.

UNB gave the Mustangs a hard time early in the game, taking the lead 16-11 at the second technical timeout. Still ahead 20-15, the Reds quietly let it slip until the score was tied at 22 by Western. The Mustangs took the following point and went on to take the set 25-23.

In the second set, the Mustangs held a slim lead all the way through to finally take a 2-0 priority with a 25-21 win.

The Varsity Reds tried to bounce back in the third by taking control of the set 10-7. But just like they did in the first, the Mustangs closed the gap and tied the game 22-22, before pulling the next three points to put an end to the match.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for them but we watched enough of them that our game plan worked well,” said Mustangs’ head coach Dave Edwards. “One of our key players had to leave the city because of her healing mother so the girls found the strength to be there for each other and to help us through this today.”

“It’s frustrating, it’s the third time in four years that we made it here and every time it’s an Ontario team that beats us on the second day, so it’s a little tough,” admitted UNB’s pilot John Richard. “I just didn’t think we were disciplined enough defensively. We got tight in every set and had our chances, but defensively we weren’t very good. It was the difference for sure.”

With 11 kills, 12 digs and two blocks, Elaine Screaton was named player of the game for the winners. For UNB, Tanya Paulin received the honour. She piled up 10 kills and 3.5 blocks for a total of 13.5 points.
