5th PLACE CIS women’s soccer championship: Emmott sparks Pandas to triumph over Trinity Western in fifth-place game
MONTREAL (CIS) – Midfielder Elise Emmott of Edmonton scored the game-winner and assisted on an insurance marker at the Alberta Pandas upset Trinity Western 2-0 to finish fifth of eight teams at the CIS women’s soccer championship at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
It was sweet revenge for Alberta (2-1), which had lost three previous meetings to the Spartans, including the Canada West final in penalty-kicks last week.
“It was tough to come all the way to Montreal to play somebody from our conference in the consolation final, so I'm not sure that everybody had the same drive as we did in the Canada West final but I was pleased with our team’s performance and kudos to both teams for coming out and finishing with a lot of effort,” said Liz Jepsen, head coach of the Pandas.
Trinity Western, winners of three national titles over the past seven years, finished the tournament with a disappointing 1-2 record and an overall mark of 16-3-1 against CIS opponents.
Emmott converted a pass from sophomore Kayla Michaels of Edmonton to open the scoring in the 34th minute of play. In the second half, Emmott’s crossing pass found Carleigh Miller of St. Albert, Alta., on the far post to make it 2-0 with less than 30 minutes remaining.
The Pandas, who improved to 20-6-4 lifetime at Nationals, had a 15-6 advantage in shots toward net against an injury-depleted Spartans lineup. They also held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelti Biggs of Spruce Grove, Alta., made three saves for the shutout, while TWU’s Cara Santaga, a freshman from New Westminster, B.C., registered a similar number and was saddled with the loss.
Emmott and Spartans midfielder Alexi Foster of Langley, B.C., each earned player of the game honours.
