CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) The Queens Gaels captured the 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship in Charlottetown on Sunday edging OUA counterpart Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 on a Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) goal 3 minutes into the 2nd overtime period.
The final was reminiscent of many of the games in the tournament being dominated by strong defensive play and few quality scoring opportunities. Five of the 11 tournament games were tied after regulation with two games going to penalty kicks.
The game was fast paced from the outset with almost all the play between the 18 yard boxes for most of the 1st half. Laurier had a brief flurry around the 43rd minute after a Queen’s wall was effective in turning aside a 25 yard free kick.
Laurier carried the play in the 2nd half having a distinct territorial advantage for extended stretches. A determined Queens’s backline denied Laurier’s advances as few opportunities were being created by the ball possessing midfield of Laurier.
“Our backline was great’, said an elated Queens coach Dave McDowell. “We defended well, remained composed. Their midfield is very strong” Indeed the entire Queen’s team defended very well posting three consecutive shut outs in the tournament.
Between hugs from teammates finals player of the game and tournament all star Filion claimed, “The biggest goal of my life!” The 30 yard blast which hit the crossbar and deflected into the Laurier net off the keeper’s back. “I was thinking get the technique right, “said Filion of the shot. “Now I’m thinking I’m happy to have such a great keeper on my team”. The keeper, Chantel Marson (London, Ont) made a game saving two handed diving stop going to her left to get in front of a headed ball off a free kick from outside the Queens 18 yard box.
Laurier coach Barry MacLean echoed McDowell’s comments. “Their backline was great. I feel bad for my girls”
