CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) –The Fraser Valley Cascade claimed their 1st ever CIS soccer medal earning bronze in an exciting match over the Montreal Carabins in Charlottetown at the 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship.

The Cascade won in dramatic fashion outscoring Montreal 5-4 in penalty kicks after regulation time left the teams deadlocked 2-2. Great saves by both keepers in the shootout resulted in the teams requiring 7 shooters before Montreal pushed their last shot wide left after Marie Verbenkov (Langley) of the Cascade had scored.
It was a tough loss for the Carabins who had advanced to the championship round with a late overtime goal over the host UPEI  Panthers, then losing in overtime to Laurier in Saturday’s semi-final.

CIS player of the year Vérnique Laveredière(Montréal) scored both Montreal goals. Her first, in the 43rd minute, was the lone highlight of a closely played first half.  Her second tied the game in the 80th minute on a quality left to right finish just as it appeared UFV was on their way to victory.
UFV  player of the game (for the 3rd time in as many games) Carly Neeson(Maple Rigde, B.C.) evened the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute with a left footed flick of the ball past the Carabin keeper finishing off a long ball into the box from Caitlin Blondin (Abbotsford). Danika Snook(Chilliwack) put the Cascade ahead in the 72nd minute with a quality finish on another long ball, this one from Danielle Schmidt(Abbotsford).

UFV appeared to have the game won in regulation, however Carabin defender Virginie Levesque(Montréal) saved a sure goal clearing the ball of the line in the 88th minute. It was the 2nd game in a row Levesque made a goal line save.

Neeson was all smiles as her team enjoyed the victory.” I’m so proud of our team, we came so far as a team. It’s my 1st time here (in PEI) and its’ a great way to finish the season > That’s a good Montreal team”.

Montréal’s Head Coach Kevin McConnell was disappointed, "The team had a good season, but we fall short of our goal.  The players played with intensity and they wanted to win this game. They showed a lot of determination to come back in the game.”  All three games had gone into overtime or pentaly kicks,  "When a game comes to shootout, you have to have some chance on your side. It is difficult to recreate a situation like during training. A lot more pressure and emotions come into a game situation."
