By UPEI sports information

CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) –RESQ finalists, Laval Rouge et Or place 5th over the Canada West Finalists, the UBC Thunderbirds with penalty kicks during the 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Consolation Final Saturday night.

Mona-Lee Pinkos(Québec) earned her third goal of the tournament in the 28th minute of the game to give Laval Rouge et Or a one goal lead.  The remaindered of the half was slow as it seemed both teams were showing some tiredness from their third game in three days.

UBC picked up the pace in the second, being very aggressive and having two players yellow cared. The pressure paid off for the Thunderbirds as Natalie Hirayama scored in the 67th minute to tie it all up. Both teams played tight for the last part of the game, not wanting to make any mistakes

Teams moved into penalty kicks and Laval’s goalie Audrey Létourneau (Saint-Nicolas) made no mistake on guessing which way UBC’s Lisa Furutani was going to shoot and made a great save.  Each kicker after that made their shot for both teams.  Other kickers for UBC, Rachael Sawer, Natalie Hirayama, Caitlin Davie, Janine Frazao.   Laval’s kickers Melissande Guy, Caroline Collin, Marwa Chebbi, and  Marie-Claude Villeneuve,

The last kicker for Laval, Maude-Nancy Durette(Matane, Que) made her shot easily and turning it seemed had not realized that they had just won until she faced her teammates running towards her in celebration.

Head Coach Helder Duatre expressed, “We are happy with how the girls played tonight.”

GAME NOTES: The overtime format at the CIS championship for the consolation final only is no over time but straight to penalty kicks. Laval last appearance at the championship in 2007 was also a 5th place finish.
