CONSOLATION SEMIFINAL #2 2010 CIS championship: Thunderbirds finish off host Panthers 4-0

By UPEI sports information

CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) –  The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the UPEI Panthers 4-0 in the 2nd one sided consolation semi final during game 6 of the 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship.

The UBC Thunderbirds will now play Laval tomorrow at 7:00 pm(AST) in the consolation final.

The first half saw the Panthers pushed deep into their end for a large portion of the time with UBC having the upper hand in shots 7-0 but unable to score.  Midway  into half Panthers goalie,  Channelle Roy was kicked in the groan by her own player and down for several minutes. She was able to get up and shake it off and then was forced to make two great saves.  The Panthers again gave up too many corner kicks to the Thunderbirds, ending the half with 7 -0.

UBC Thunderbird player of the game Janine Frazao (Port Moody, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 60th minute. The game was put out of reach late as UBC received goals from Carmen Lindsay (Kelowna), 83rd minute, Lisa Furutani (North Vancouver) 88th  and Christina Donnelly (Ottawa) 90th to finish of a clearly out of gas Panther squad 4-0.

“The tournament didn’t go the way we hoped, but we’ll take the win and look to do well on Sunday” commented Frazao.

“We emptied the tank”, noted Panther coach Mike Redmond. “Too many tired and banged up bodies today. Our coaching staff is proud of the season these girls put together”
Saturday's feature games will be the two semi finals 1 pm & 4 pm, the first with OUA finalist the Queen's Golden Gaels taking on the Fraser Valley Cascades who are on an eight game winning streak.  The second game will have the RSEQ Champions,  the Montreal Carabins taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks, OUA Champions.
