By UPEI sports information

CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) – The Montréal Carabins ended the road to gold for UPEI with a 2-1 overtime win in the 2010 CIS Women's Soccer Championship fourth quarter final.

Montreal now advance to the second semi final on Saturday at 4:00 pm(AST) where they will play the OUA Champions the Laurier Golden Hawks. UPEI will face the UBC Thunderbirds tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the consolation semi final,

Cholé Bouclin Sabourin (Montréal) scored with 5 minutes left in the 2nd overtime to secure the win in the most entertaining game of the day The high winds present earlier in the day had subsided significantly for this match. The Carabins had tied the score in the 72rd minute, finally connecting on a corner. It was their 11rth corner of the game. In the end they finished with 19 corners in a game which generated far fewer scoring chances for the Carabin than the territorial advantage they enjoyed would indicate.

UPEI opened the scoring in the 39th minute as Andrea Archibald (Saskatoon) rifled home a rebound of a Tessa Roche free kick. Roche had the large home crowd on their feet in the 45th minute as they were sure she upped the lead to 2-0. However, her line drive hit the crossbar, dropped to the ground, bounced off the post and out of harms away all in- a split second.

"I thought we played fantastic ", commented Panther coach Mike Redmond. "The girls did what we asked tactically, it was a great effort against a very worthy opponent."

Carabins coach Kevin McConnell was pleased to get the result, "They made us play longer than we wanted; they're very organized which made it difficult to create chances, even more so when they got ahead."

Montreal has been on a mission all season, finishing first in Quebec with a sparkling 10-1-3 record before capturing a third straight RSEQ title thanks to a 2-0 win over Laval in the league championship match. They will be looking to add to their medal collection as they own a silver and bronze.
