THUNDER BAY, ON (CIS) – The second day of wrestling at the 2011 CIS wrestling championships concluded with Alberta winning the women's championship banner, while Concordia came out on top on the men's side.

On the women's side, Alberta scored 47 team points to edge Calgary (45) and Brock (44). Host Lakehead (27) and Saskatchewan (26) rounded out the top 5. It marked Alberta's first national title since women's wrestling was added to the CIS program in 1998-99.

On the men's side, Concordia (55) also won a tight three-team race over UNB (52) and Regina (49), with Saskatchewan (41) and Guelph (34) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Concordia had previously won 6 titles since the first CIS men's championship in 1968-69 (1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990 - Note: co-champions in 1985 and 1990).

Only one woman had won five CIS gold medals in the past but her feat was accomplished over a six-year period. Former US Olympian Ali Bernard from New Ulm, Minn., captured four straight titles as a member of the Regina Cougars from 2005 to 2008 and a fifth one with the Alberta Pandas a year ago.
