“Overall this particular game was our most consistent effort,” said Alberta head coach Howie Draper following the match. “The good thing is we left with a win, and I felt like our girls played with a lot of pride and determination.”
Midway through the first period Bisons netminder Leiette Klassen (Altona, Man.) lost her stick, so defender Chantal DeSpiegelaere (Winnipeg, Man.) gave up hers, giving the Panadas a full two minutes in the Bisons zone with them unable to clear the puck. Alberta had several scoring chances during the sequence, but the Manitoba’s defence kept the puck out of the net.
The Bisons caught the first break of the game on the power play. On a 2-on-1, Amy Lee (Brandon, Man.) setup Meagan Vestby (Swan River, Man.) who fired the puck glove side on Kanesa Shwetz (Waskatenau, Alta.). The Pandas got it back three minutes later with a goal from Katie Borbely (Calgary, Alta.). The fourth year forward buried the rebound from a Nicole Pratt (High Prairie, Alta.) point shot. The Panada’s Monika Maskalski (Edmonton, Alta.) gave Alberta their second goal on a shot from the top of the circle that slipped past Klassen and into the net.
Alberta made it 3-1 on a power play at 12:29 of the second period. Andrea Wiebe (Lloydminster, Alta.) shot the puck from the side of the net and beat a sprawling Klassen. The Panda’s momentum kept going with another goal off a 2-on-1 from Lindsie Fairfield (Calgary, Alta.). Alberta dominated play in the second period, outshooting their opponents 12-5.
Manitoba got on the board again in the third period. Vestby notched her second of the match by deflecting Maggie Litchfield-Medd’s (Winnipeg, Man.) shot past Kaitlyn Chapman (Chauvin, Alta.) who took over netminding duties in the third for the Pandas. Alberta answered at 12:19 with a goal from Melody Howard (Grande Prairie, Alta.).
The Pandas held a shot advantage over their Canada West rivals 31-12 at the end of the game.
