WATERLOO, Ont. (CIS) - The St. Francis Xavier X-Women defeated the Manitoba Bisons 4-3 to advance to their first ever gold medal game against the McGill Martlets. Both McGill and StFX are undefeated this season.

“We’re a team all year long that has been able to wear teams down,” said StFX head coach David Synishin. “It’s a lot more difficult at this level, but we were able to it again tonight. Mentally for us we know that our best hockey is in the third period. The team doesn’t give up, they have great character they work hard and that is one of the traits that we have that is very important.”
Early in the first period StFX had a couple of good chances in the slot, but defencemen Chelsea Braun (Winnipeg, Man.) blocked both shots. Manitoba took the puck back the other way on a 2-on-1, but the shot went wide.
The opportunities kept coming for the X-women as a turnover
behind the net allowed another opportunity on the doorstep, but
Bison netminder Tara Lacquette (Mallard, Man.) made the save. As
the play continued, Braun pinched in and picked up the puck at the
hash marks to score her team’s first goal of the tournament.
The Bison’s continued to apply pressure and Tammy Brade
(Roblin, Man.) managed to beat Kristy Garrow (London, Ont.), but
not the post. StFX had a great chance to tie it when
Erin Brophy (Antigonish, N.S.) got a breakaway, but
Lacquette’s quick glove hand stymied her opportunity.
The X-women scored with the man-advantage when Nicole Hansom (Dartmouth, N.S.) tied it up on a redirected shot to the top shelf from Jenna Downey (Stratford, Ont.). The Bison’s restored their lead a minute later when Rachele Bosc (Dufresne, Man.) came in from the half boards and took a hard shot that got through Garrow and crossed the line.
The X-women dominated the first few minutes of play in the second period keeping the Bison’s penned in their own zone. Manitoba returned the favour midway through the period, using the short change to their advantage. Addie Miles (Winnipeg, Man.) had a good opportunity, but rang it off the post for the Bisons.
At 12:06 of the second period, Carolyn Campbell (Ottawa, Ont.) took a shot that deflected off of Lacquette’s glove into the crease for an easy goal for Shannon Crezel (Cambridge, Ont.) from the side of the net. StFX maintained momentum and the pressure generated another power play opportunity. Suzanne Fenerty (Cole Harbour, N.S.) took a shot from the point that Nicole Hansom tipped and went five-hole to give the X-Women their first lead of the game while on the man-advantage.
Manitoba’s Addie Miles tied it up with six minutes left in the period. The fourth year forward received a perfect pass from Caitlin MacDonald (Winnipeg, Man.) right in front of the net and found space between Garrow’s pads.
With the game tied going into the third period, both squads were
looking for the break that would get them the win. StFX got the go
ahead goal from Carolyn Campbell at 13:48 of the third period. The
X-women looked to go up two goals but Molly MacDonald (Wetaskiwin,
Alta.) was called for a crease violation and the goal was waved
off.
“I thought that was one of the best games of the tournament so far in terms of up and downs, scoring chances and both teams competing,” said Manitoba head coach John Rempel. “X is a very good team and they know how to win in tight games.”
Manitoba went 0-for-5 with the man-advantage and was 0-for-9 in the tournament. StFX went 2-for-5 in the game.
St. FX will play McGill on Sunday, March 13th at 7:30 p.m. for the 2011 CIS championship. Wilfrid Laurier will play the Queen’s Gaels for the bronze medal at 4 p.m. and Manitoba will take on Alberta in the fifth place game at 12 noon in a rematch of the Canada West final.
