WINDSOR, Ont. (CIS) – The seventh-seeded Wilfrid Laurier
Golden Hawks defeated the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues 64-57 in the
consolation final of the CIS women’s basketball Final 8,
Sunday morning, at the University of Windsor’s St. Denis
Centre.

The fifth-place finish marks Laurier’s best result in three
all-time appearances at the national championship. The Hawks return
home with a 2-1 record that also includes a 58-51 quarter-final
loss to No. 2 Saskatchewan and a 56-52 consolation semifinal win
over No. 3 Carleton.
Toronto lost 58-49 to No. 4 Cape Breton in Friday’s opening
round and edged No. 8 Laval 82-79 on Saturday.
“It’s a nice way to finish the season,” said
Laurier head coach Paul Falco, in his third campaign at the helm.
“We really wanted to end the year with a win. To finish fifth
as the seventh seed, and after taking fourth place in Ontario,
it’s a nice accomplishment.”
A number of seniors playing in their final university game ended on
a high note.
Fifth-year Laurier guard Mallory Kohlmeier of Sarnia, Ont., earned
game-MVP honours following an 18-point effort, half of them on
3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
Megan Grant of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Renata Adamczyk of
Greensville, Ont., chipped in for the winners with 11 and 10
points, respectively. Adamczyk also grabbed 15 rebounds in her
final CIS outing.
Erin McNeely of Kingston, Ont., paced the Blues with 13 points and
seven boards.
In a game that saw the Golden Hawks lead from start to finish,
Laurier made Toronto pay by scoring 15 points off turnovers.
The Hawks offence was clicking early in the first quarter. They
charged out to a commanding lead as they pushed the pace with
Kohlmeier dropping eight points and three assists in the quarter as
the Golden Hawks led 20-11.
Shooting 50% from beyond the three-point arch the Golden Hawks
carried a 36-23 lead into half time, and Laurier’s hot
shooting continued in the second quarter. With nine players
chipping in on the score sheet, Kohlmeier led all scorers at the
break with 13 points while Grant had seven.
Toronto continued to try and force their offence turning the ball
over 10 times. McNeely led the attack for the Blues in the first 20
minutes with seven points and three rebounds, while star forward
Nicki Schutz had a quiet six points and five boards.
In the second half Laurier continued their balanced attack, as they
maintained a 13-point lead heading into the final stanza.
The fourth quarter saw Toronto turn up the heat as they pressed to
close the gap to five points with two minutes remaining.
However, that would be as close as the Varsity Blues would get as
Laurier’s defence down the stretch was impressive limiting
the Blues opportunities to secure the
win.
GAME NOTES: Toronto had won the two previous head-to-head meetings
this season, 60-52 in conference play on Nov. 27, in Waterloo, and
62-54 in the OUA bronze medal game on March 5, in Toronto... It was
the first-ever game between the two teams at the CIS
championship...
