The victory propels Wilfrid Laurier to Saturday’s regional
final, where the Golden Hawks will square off with host Regina for
an automatic berth to next weekend’s CIS Final Eight in
Windsor, Ont.
Wilfrid Laurier led by five points by after the first quarter, then
outscored UQAM by a 17-4 margin in the second to take a 17-point
lead into the half. The two teams then exploded in the third for a
combined 44 points, with UQAM ending the quarter on an 11-2 run and
scoring a total of 26 in the quarter to cut the deficit to 10.
The offence then dried up for both teams, as UQAM and Wilfrid
Laurier scored just five points in the first eight minutes of the
fourth quarter. A pair of Jessica Bibeau-Côté free
throws brought the Citadins to within seven points with just over a
minute left, but that was as close as UQAM would come. The Golden
Hawks had some key defensive stops in the final minute and hit a
pair of free throws to keep UQAM at bay.
Rookie guard Felicia Mazerolle and fourth-year post Christa Mancino
tied for the game high with 17 points apiece for Wilfrid Laurier.
Renata Adamczyk scored 12 and added 10 rebounds to secure the
game’s lone double-double, while Megan Grant added a
game-high 14 rebounds for the Golden Hawks.
Michelle Auger-Bellemare, UQAM’s leading scorer and a
first-team all-conference selection, got into early foul trouble
and only ended up playing 22 minutes. The third-year guard still
scored a team-leading 12 points for the Citadins, while Marjolaine
Gauthier-Théorêt scored eight and had a team-high five
steals. Bibeau-Côté ended up with seven points for
UQAM.
Wilfrid Laurier shot 36.1% from the field during the win, while
UQAM was 17-for-62 (27.4%). Both teams hit 15 free throws and were
2-for-14 from the three-point line.
NOTES: Saturday will mark the second time that Regina and Wilfrid
Laurier have met in a postseason contest … the Cougars
defeated the Golden Hawks by a 68-52 score in the quarterfinals of
the 2004 CIS Championship in Winnipeg.
