University of Windsor named host of the 2011 CIS Women's Basketball Championships

The University of Windsor and Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that they have been named the official hosts of the 2011 CIS Women’s Basketball Championships at the St. Denis Centre, as announced today by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

This will be the first time in Lancer program history that the University of Windsor will host the national championships in Women’s Basketball.  The Lancers have successfully hosted the CIS Track & Field championships on a number of occasions in past years, most recently this past March at the St. Denis Centre.

The CIS announced the host institutions for 22 national championships over the next five years. All sites have been selected pending the next step in the process which involves the signing of a championship agreement by both parties.

The Bronze Baby Trophy will be contended in three different cities over the next three years. Following Windsor in 2011, the University of Calgary will host in 2012 and the University of Regina will host in 2013. The Final Eight has been held in Calgary on three occasions in the past (1994, 1978, 1977) and in Regina twice (2009, 1979).

“It is a tremendous honour to be chosen as the host of the 2011 Women’s Basketball Championships,” said Athletic Director Gord Grace. "The university and the City of Windsor have a proven track record of hosting outstanding events, and I am sure this will be no exception.”

“With our recent success on the court and the fact that this is a very knowledgeable basketball community, it seems like a natural fit to bring this championship to the St. Denis Centre,” Grace continued. “I look forward to large crowds and entertaining competition as the women competes for the Bronze Baby.”

The Lancers will open their season on Friday November 5, 2010 against the York Lions in Toronto. They open their home schedule on Friday November 12th against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the St. Denis Centre. Season passes for the 2010-11 season go on sale on Tuesday July 6th on the www.goLancers.ca website.
