2009-10 OUA East major awards and all-stars announced

HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased
to announce its East major award winners and all-stars for women's
basketball.
Third-year Ottawa Gee-Gees centre Hannah
Sunley-Paisley (Toronto) is the 2010 East player of the
year. She led all of OUA with 415 points scored, averaging 18.9
points over 22 games. Sunley-Paisley was also second in rebounding
with 237 boards, averaging 10.8 a game for a season double-double.
She was also near the top of the division rankings with 52 steals,
32 blocks and a 49.3 percent field goal percentage on 171-of-347
shooting. Sunley-Paisley also headlines the East first-team
all-stars.
Across town, Jessica Resch (Orleans, Ont.) of the
Carleton Ravens is the East rookie of the year. The first-year
guard was on the court for 500 minutes this season, scoring 168
points and grabbing 95 rebounds. Resch also compiled 23 assists, 11
steals and three blocks. Resch is also a member of the East
all-rookie team.
Lacey O'Sullivan (Port Colborne, Ont.) of the
Ryerson Rams is the East defensive player of the year. The
fifth-year guard led the East in steals with 60 in 2009-10. She was
also second on the Rams in rebounds with 114, including 68 from the
defensive zone. Offensively, O'Sullivan scored 208 points and led
Ryerson with 73 assists. O'Sullivan is also a first-team
all-star.
Fourth-year wing Maddie Soye (Waterloo, Ont.) of
the Queen's Gaels is the East recipient of the Joy Bellinger Award,
presented annually to a female student-athlete in recognition of
outstanding service to the sport and to the advancement of
university athletics. The academic all-Canadian assists at Kingston
Collegiate & Vocational Institute as a coach, tutor and
teaching assistant. She also part of Revved Up, an assisted
exercise program in Kingston, Ont. She is known as a defensive
stalwart on the Gaels.
Taffe Charles of the Carleton Ravens is the East
coach of the year. The Ravens had a remarkable run during the
2009-10 season, climbing as high as No. 9 in the national rankings.
Their 18-4 record was good for top spot in the division, and four
more wins than they had the previous season. The Ravens won 10
straight to conclude the regular season, and 16 of their last 17
games.
Joining Sunley-Paisley and O'Sullivan as East first team all-stars
are Carleton guard Alyson Bush (Ottawa), Queen's
guard Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) and forward
Nicki Schutz (Toronto) of the Toronto Varsity
Blues.
The 2010 East second-team all stars includes the Laurentian Lady
Vees duo of forward Darrah Bumstead (New Hamburg,
Ont.) and guard Katie Goggins (Hanmer, Ont.) as
well as Ryerson guards Lisa Goldring (Burlington,
Ont.) and Ashley MacDonald (Port Colborne, Ont.).
Queen's wing Katie Guthrie (Orillia, Ont.) rounds
out the second-team list.
In addition to Resch, guard Carley Lewis (Halifax)
of the RMC Paladins, guard Nadia Qahwash
(Kitchener, Ont.) of the York Lions, guard Jennifer
Stoqua (Ottawa) of the Ravens and Ryerson forward
Kelsey Wright (Brampton, Ont.) make up the 2010
East all-rookie team.
OUA West award winners and all-stars in women's basketball will be
announced on Tuesday.
