Countdown to 2012 CIS Track and Field Championship

WINNIPEG - The University of Manitoba Track and Field program will host the 2011 CIS Championships from March 8-10 at the Max Bell Fieldhouse (U of Manitoba campus). This will be the first time that the Bisons have hosted this event since the 2004-05 season. Manitoba will now prepare to host this prestigious event for the sixth time as the Bisons also hosted a CIS Track and Field Championship in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995 and recently in 2005.

There are now only 150 days and counting until the start of the three-day 2011 CIS T&F Championships starting on the afternoon of Thursday, March 8, 2012.

This national championship will again involve the community as there is a call for local track and field teams/participants from elementary schools to run in events during the meet and also an opportunity to volunteer. To have your team/athletes get more information to be a part of this national event, please contact Bison track and field head coach Claude Berube at 204-474-8989.

Championship ticket information will be announced later in 2011 prior to the Bison track and field season starting at the end of November.

Bison track and field head coach Claude Berube, in his 15th season, stated, “It is an exciting time as we look forward to hosting another successful CIS Championship and fielding competitive teams in front of a large number of fans, family staged in a friendly environment.”

Over the last 15 years, Manitoba (1995, 2005, 2012) and Saskatchewan (2006) are the only two universities from Western Canada who have hosted the CIS T&F National Championship. At the 2005 CIS T&F Championship held at the University of Manitoba, the Bisons women’s team finished with a silver medal (the highest finish in over a decade) and the men’s side was seventh. The other four times that Manitoba hosted this CIS championship event, the Bison men’s track and field team were champions.
