DAY 2 (of 3) CIS championships: Lancers take control

SHERBROOKE, Que. (CIS) – The University of Windsor Lancers have taken control of the 2011 CIS Mondo Track and Field Championships at Uniestrie Hall on the campus of the Université de Sherbrooke. The Lancer women have racked up 93.5 points and hold a commanding 37.5 point lead over the second place University of Guelph Gryphons after the second day of competition while the men have scored 71 points and lead Gryphons by 10 heading into the final day of the meet.

Noelle Montcalm paced the Blue and Gold picking up a pair of medals including a gold medal in the women's 60m hurdles finishing the race in a time of 8.45 seconds. The silver medal came in the 300m event where she finished 0.05 seconds behind gold medallist Aamonn Nelson of the University of Calgary who crossed the line in a time of 39.02 seconds.

Also picking up points for the Lancers were Raellen Hunter and Melissa Bishop who finished 1-2 in the 1000m event. Hunter stopped the clock at 2:49.09 while Bishop crossed the finish line at 2:49.29. They also teamed up to lead Windsor to gold in the 4x800m relay in a time of 8:49.48.

The Lancers also picked up a pair of medals in the shot put on Friday as Steffi Stephenson and Celine Freeman-Gibb won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Stephenson's toss of 14.18m was second only to University of Saskatchewan's Taryn Suttie who earned her second gold of the meet with a throw of 15.72m Rachel Cliff and Laurie Courtney of the University of Guelph helped prevent the Lancers from running away with the team title on Day 2 winning gold and bronze respectively in the 3000m event. McMaster Marauder distance runner Victoria Coates capture silver 10 seconds behind Cliff who finished the 3-km race in a time of 9:38.52.

The highlight of the night for the Sherbrooke crowd came in the long jump where a trio of Quebec athletes won medals. Hometown favourite Pascale Délisle of the Sherbrooke Vert & Or set a new school record en route to the gold medal with a jump of 6.01m. Laurence Beaudet of the Université de Montréal finished the competition 2-centimetres behind Délisle. Kimberly Hyacinthe of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) finished third.

On the men's side of the competition, the Windsor Lancers reached the podium on three occasions en route to a first place standing two-third of the way through the competition.

Brendan Dills earned a silver medal in the men's 300m competition finishing 0.36 seconds behind gold medalist Dontae Richards-Kwok of York University who crossed the finish line in 33.70 seconds.

In the 60m hurdles, it was Matt Brisson of the University of Western Ontario who edged out Ingvar Moseley of York University in a photo finish to capture the gold. The two athletes crossed the finish in a time of 8.18 seconds. Anthony Dandie of Windsor was third in 8.39 seconds.

The Lancers finally got a taste of gold in the men's 4x800m relay as the quartet of Windsor runners finished the race in a time of 7:37.65.

Tim Hendry of the Guelph Gryphons proved why he was the favourite in the hammer throw besting the field by over a metre in order to capture gold in the event. His throw of 17.98m bettered teammate Dustin McCrank (16.95m) while Dalhousie Tiger Seth London took the bronze (16.64m)

In other action...

Jaden Ostapowich of the University of Alberta took gold in the 1000m event in a time of 2:25.82.

Finally, the 3000m competition came down to the write as a trio of runners broke away from the pack in the final three laps to bring the fans to their feet at the Univestrie Hall. Guelph's Kyle Boorsma and Alex Genest finished 1-2 respectively while hometown favourite Olivier Lavoie won the bronze.
