OUA championship: Lancers sweep track and field titles
TORONTO - The defending national champion Windsor Lancers proved
one again to be the class of Ontario University Athletics (OUA),
winning both the men's and women's titles at the 2010 OUA track and
field championships, hosted by York University at the Toronto Track
and Field Centre.
The men won their 12th straight OUA crown, while the women
recaptured a title they lost to the Guelph Gryphons in 2009. The
Lancers women have won five of the last six OUA titles. The Western
Mustangs and Gryphons finished in a tie for second place in the
men's standings, while Western earned silver and Guelph took bronze
on the women's side.
Highlighting the Lancers individually on Day 2 was Melissa
Bishop (Eganville, Ont.) who won the women's 600m race in
a time of 1:30.79. The Windsor women's 4x200m relay team of
Noelle Montcalm (Windsor, Ont.), Nicole
Sassine (Windsor, Ont.), Charelle Anobile
(Tecumseh, Ont.) and Danielle Harrison
(Leamington, Ont.) won gold in a time of 1:40.09. In field events,
Jaideene Lowe (Toronto) won the women's triple
jump in a distance of 12.36 metres while Mike
Miller (Windsor, Ont.) set a new OUA championship shot put
record with a throw of 16.93 metres.
There were other OUA records set on Day 2. Kristin
Obrochta (Mississauga, Ont.) of the York Lions set a new
standard in the weight throw with a distance of 18.07 metres. The
York men's relay team of Tyrone Halstead
(Mississauga, Ont.), Dontae Richards-Kwok
(Mississauga, Ont.), Olu Ogunde (Lagos, Nigeria)
and Randolph Fajardo (Toronto) also set a new
record in the 4x200m in a time of 1:26.60. Halstead and Fajardo
completed the closest finish of Saturday in the men's 60m, with
Halstead earning gold in a time of 6.7327, four thousandths of a
second ahead of Fajardo.
Another York student-athlete earning gold was Jonathan
Odumeru (Guelph, Ont.) who won the men's long jump with a
leap of 2.02 metres.
The Mustangs won both 4x400m relays, ahead of the Lancers each
race. Jenessa Olson (Ilderton, Ont.), Jen
Perrault (Burlington, Ont.), Lisa Grieve
(London, Ont.) and Jen Cotten (Barrie, Ont.) won
the women's race in 3:50.81 while the men's team of Elias
Granillo (London, Ont.), Jason Kerr
(Strathroy, Ont.), Rob Gooch (Vancouver) and
Scott Leitch (London, Ont.) won in a time of
3:18.66. Another Western student-athlete that reached the top of
the podium was Andrew Judge (London, Ont.) with a
distance of 14.91 metres in the men's triple jump.
The Gryphons were golden in a couple of races on Saturday,
including Sarah Peirce (Aurora, Ont.) winning the
women's 60m sprint in a time of 7.51, and teammate Rachel
Cliff (Vancouver) taking the women's 1,500m in a time of
4:26.91. Sarah Boyle (Scarborough, Ont.) of the
Toronto Varsity Blues won the women's high jump in a height of 1.75
metres.
Michael Robertson (Williamstown, Ont.) of the
Ottawa Gee-Gees took the men's 600m in a time of 1:18.92, while
Matt Hulse (Hartington, Ont.) of the Queen's Gaels
won the men's 1,500m in a time of 3:52.23. Rounding out the gold
medalists on Day 2 was Jason Wurster
(Stevensville, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues who won the men's pole
vault in a height of 5.40 metres.
All gold and silver medalists in individual competitions and gold
medalists in relays earn OUA all-star status. Major award winners
in track and field will be announced in the coming days.
The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) indoor track and field
championships will be hosted by the University of Windsor from
March 11-13.
