RECAP DAY 2 (of 3) CIS swimming championships: Dinos women pull ahead, men’s race down to the wire

CALGARY (CIS) – The University of Calgary women hold a
commanding lead in the team standings while the UBC Thunderbirds
ensured it would be a two-horse race in the men’s competition
as Day 2 of the CIS swimming championships wrapped up Friday.

While the Dinos women have a cushion of more than 140 points in
their hunt for a three-peat, the men’s race will come down to
the final day as UBC edged in front of defending champion Calgary
by just 9.5 points. The Thunderbirds trailed the Dinos by just 3.5
points after Day 1 but got a 13-point swing despite just two podium
finishes on the night. With 18 swimmers against Calgary’s 13,
the T-Birds’ depth allowed them to move in front of the
hometown squad.
Toronto trails UBC by nearly 200 points for third in the
women’s standings with 222 points, while Victoria (162.5),
Montreal (154), and Alberta (126) round out the top six.
The Dinos men got some badly-needed points back in the final event
of the day, the 4x200-metre freestyle relay. The Calgary team of
Connor Maxey, Brad Hankewich, Colin Miazga, and David Dimitrov took
gold in a time of 7:17.97, then got some help from Laval and
Toronto. The Rouge et Or grabbed silver while the Varsity Blues
took bronze, knocking UBC off the podium. It was the first
non-medal finish for the Thunderbirds in a CIS championship relay
since 2004 and ended a string of 16 consecutive podium finishes in
the 4x200 free relay for UBC.
Laval and Toronto find themselves in a tight race for third in the
men’s standings as well, with the Varsity Blues sitting just
10 points ahead of the Rouge et Or’s 258 points with one day
remaining.
While the men’s team race was intriguing to watch on Day 2,
there were some spectacular individual performances posted. Friday
saw the meet’s first record-breaking swim in the
women’s 50-metre freestyle with Marie-Pier Ratelle of Laval
taking 12 hundredths off Erica Morningstar’s 2009 CIS
championship mark of 25.17. Her new mark of 25.05 inches CIS women
closer to breaking the 25-second barrier in the
‘splash-and-dash’ and set the stage for a teammate in
the following race.
Moments later, Dominique Massie-Martel completed a Laval sweep of
the 50 free with his winning time of 22.68, beating out UBC’s
Tommy Gossland by just five hundredths.
Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane of Victoria won his second gold
medal of the meet Friday. After finishing in a dead heat for the
title with Calgary’s Colin Miazga in the 200 freestyle
Thursday, Cochrane pulled away from his Dinos challenger, Dimitrov,
in the 400 free to finish with a time of 3:48.13.
Three swimmers repeated their CIS titles won in 2010, led by
UBC’s Martha McCabe in the 200-metre breaststroke.
Calgary’s Jason Block out-touched Western’s Bryn Jones
for the second straight season to add 200-metre gold to his
100-metre breaststroke title from Thursday, while Toronto’s
Zack Chetrat took home consecutive golds in the men’s
200-metre butterfly.
Other defending champions didn’t fare so well. Chantique
Payne of the Guelph Gryphons was pushed back to the silver medal
position in the 50-metre butterfly by Toronto’s Paige
Schultz, while defending 400-metre freestyle champion Kevyn
Peterson of Calgary too bronze behind UBC’s Savannah King and
Dinos teammate Julianne Brown in the event.
Calgary’s Morningstar extended her unbeaten string at the CIS
championships to 18 events with two more gold medals Friday. After
stopping the clock in 59.34 in the 100-metre backstroke, the first
event of the evening, Morningstar led off Calgary’s
victorious 4x200-metre freestyle relay team. After building up a
lead of more than four seconds after her opening leg, Morningstar
watched teammates Brown, Talia Benson, and Peterson pull away from
the pack to post a winning time of 8:05.63, nearly six seconds
better than silver medal-winning UBC.
Other individual champions Friday included UBC’s Kelly
Aspinall in the men’s 100-metre backstroke, Toronto’s
Mike Smerek in the 50 fly and Stephanie Horner of Victoria in the
200 fly.
The three-day CIS championships wrap up Saturday with prelims
starting at 10 a.m. Mountain Time and finals at 6 p.m. MT.
