Dalhousie men and women sweep AUS swimming titles at UPEI
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE - The Dalhousie Tigers men's and women's swimming teams captured two more AUS swimming banners this past weekend at the 2010 Subway AUS Swimming Championship hosted by UPEI at the CARI Centre in Charlottetown, PE.
David Sharpe and Kristen Vandenberg of Dalhousie led the way as the men captured their 12th consecutive banner and the women took home their ninth in a row.
Sharpe, a freshman from Halifax, NS was named the Alexander Keith's AUS Championship Male Swimmer of the Meet as well as the Rookie of the Meet after winning gold in each of the four individual events he competed in (100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 200m butterfly, 200m backstroke), including three new AUS records.
Vandenberg, a fourth year student from London, ON, was chosen the Alexander Keith's AUS Female Swimmer of the Meet thanks to gold medal performances in the 400m and 800m freestyle events. Vandenburg's time of 8:52.38 in the 800 broke Nancy Garapick's school record that had stood since 1981.
For being named the top swimmers at the championship, both Sharpe and Vandenberg took home $1,000 courtesy of AUS Championship sponsor Alexander Keith's.
Other performances of note include UPEI's Eric Beaton becoming the first ever UPEI Swimmer to qualify for the CIS Swimming Championship. Saturday night, Beaton touched the wall first to win gold in the 50m freestyle in a time of 23:74. Eric also swam a personal best in the 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.
UNB's Danielle Losier was named the AUS Rookie of the Meet as she captured three gold medals for the Varsity Reds and qualified to compete at the CIS Championships in three breaststroke events: 50 m (1:12.67) 100 m (1:12.67) and 200 m (2:37.63). She also qualified for nationals in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:23.68, earning a silver medal for her efforts. Losier was also a member of the Varsity Reds relay teams that won silver medals in the 400m freestyle and the 800m freestyle.
