OUA Championship Day 2: Record day in the pool
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Three new Ontario University Athletics
(OUA) records were set on Friday in Day 2 of the 2010 OUA Swimming
Championships at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre at Brock
University.
Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer and Canadian Olympian Colin
Russell (Burlington, Ont.) was part of two record swims,
setting a new standard in the men's 200m freestyle in a time of
1:47.23. He was also the anchor in the men's 4x100m medley relay.
Russell and Toronto teammates Cam Cummings
(Oakville, Ont.), Stevan Kalaba (Toronto), and
Zack Chetrat (Oakville, Ont.) won in an OUA record
time of 3:44.81. Russell holds Canadian records in both the 100m
and 200m freestyle and 4x100m and 4x200m free relays. He
represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The other record was set by the Western Mustangs team of
Jennifer Trung (Maple, Ont.), Paulyne
Kilty (Newmarket, Ont.), Melissa Loyzer
(Hamilton, Ont.) and Amber Hutchinson (Brampton,
Ont.), swimming the women's 4x100m medley relay in a time of
4:15.87. All but fourth-year swimmer Hutchinson are competing at
their first OUA championships.
A pair of swimmers joined Russell as double-gold medalists on
Friday. Whitney Rich (Dorchester, Ont.) of the
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks won both the women's 100m breaststroke
(1:11.82) and 200m individual medley (2:19.74), successfully
defending her 2009 titles. Russell's teammate Chetrat won the men's
100m butterfly in a time of 55.44. Varsity Blues swimmers swept the
podium in this race as Mike Smerek (St.
Catharines, Ont.) and Andy Townsend (Toronto) won
silver and bronze, respectively. Chetrat also won bronze in the
men's 200m freestyle.
Chantique Payne (Brantford, Ont.) of the Guelph
Gryphons won her second gold medal of the meet, defending her
women's 100m butterfly title in a time of 1:02.02, 5-100ths of a
second ahead of Sasha Theron (Mississauga, Ont.)
of the Varsity Blues in the closest final race on Friday. Payne won
the women's 50m butterfly on Thursday. She was one of two Gryphons
to win gold on Friday, as teammate Andrew Ford
(Guelph, Ont.) won the men's 200m individual medley in a time of
2:02.21.
A pair of Mustangs also won individual medals. Hayley
Nell (London, Ont.) won the women's 200m freestyle in a
time of 2:01.37, while Bryn Jones (Newmarket,
Ont.) won the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:03.44. Nell and
Jones both successfully defended their 2009 titles.
Once again, both the Mustangs and Varsity Blues lead the medal
count. After finishing Thursday with seven medals each, Western and
Toronto swimmers added another 11 on Friday for a total of 18
entering Saturday. Combined, the Mustangs and Varsity Blues swept
the podium in four races, and at least one student-athlete from
either Western or Toronto won a medal in each final.
The OUA swimming championships resume on Saturday beginning at 10
a.m.
