OTTAWA (CIS) – The schedule and quarter-final matchups
were announced Monday morning for the 2010 Canadian Interuniversity
Sport men’s soccer championship set to get under way on
Thursday at the University of Toronto.
The eight-team, single-elimination tournament culminates on Sunday
with the national final scheduled for 4 p.m. All 11 games from the
event will be webcast by SSN Canada (www.ssncanada.ca or www.cis-sic.ca).
The Laval Rouge et Or will have a chance to defend their CIS title
from 2009 after claiming the Quebec banner for a second straight
season over the weekend. Laval captured the first Sam Davidson
memorial trophy in school history last year with a 3-2 win over
McGill in the CIS title match.
In addition to Laval, the teams who will compete for the Davidson
trophy this week are the tournament host – and OUA champion -
Varsity Blues, the Saint Mary’s Huskies (AUS champions), UBC
thunderbirds (Canada West champions), UQAM Citadins (Quebec
finalists), York Lions (OUA finalists), Alberta Golden Bears
(Canada West regular season champions), as well as the Western
Ontario Mustangs (OUA bronze medallists).
In the regional finals, all played Sunday, Saint Mary’s beat
Cape Breton 2-1, Laval blanked UQAM 2-0, Toronto edged York 1-0 on
penalty kicks, and UBC downed Saskatchewan 1-0.
Alberta claimed Canada West bronze with a 3-2 victory against
Calgary, while Western finished third in Ontario with a 3-2 PK win
over Ryerson.
Reigning champion Laval and York kick off the CIS tourney Thursday
at 11 a.m. The other quarter-finals will see Saint Mary’s
square off against Alberta at 1:30 p.m., UBC battle Western at 4
p.m., and host Toronto face off versus UQAM at 6:30 p.m.
The winners on opening day move on to Saturday’s semifinals,
while the losers resume play Friday on the consolation side of the
bracket.
Six of the participating teams have hoisted the Davidson trophy in
the past. The Thunderbirds have claimed a record 11 national titles
since the inaugural CIS championship in 1970, while the Bears (4),
Lions (2), Mustangs (2), Rouge et Or (1) and Blues (1) have all
triumphed at least once.
NOTE: A complete championship preview will follow on Tuesday.
