CONSOLATION #1: 2009 CIS mens soccer championship : Vikes tie record, advance to consolation final
By Trinity Western University sports information office
LANGLEY, B.C. (CIS) – The Victoria Vikes tied a tournament
record for most goals in a game as they outscored the UPEI Panthers
6-2 in the first consolation match of the CIS men’s soccer
championship at Trinity Western University, Friday afternoon.
Only three teams had previously found the back of the net six times
in a single game at the Nationals since the inaugural CIS tourney
in 1970. Saint Mary’s was the first to accomplish the feat
back in 1979 in a 6-4 semi-final win over Concordia, and Alberta
pulled the trick in back-to-back years scoring 6-1 pool-play
victories over Sherbrooke in 1994 and UQTR in 1995.
Today’s consolation duel was also the third highest scoring
affair in championship history after the 6-4 Saint Mary’s win
in 1979 and a 5-4 OT victory by Saint Mary’s over Western in
the 1988 preliminaries.
Fifth-year all-Canadian striker Cole McFarlane of Calgary tallied
twice in the first half for the Canada West champion Vikes as the
teams retreated to the locker room tied 2-2 at the break. Andrew
Ravenhill of Victoria, with the game-winner in the 48th minute,
Corey Sanford of Campbell River, B.C., in the 66th, Matthew
McNaughton of Calgary in the 70th and Wesley Barrett of Richmond,
B.C., in the 89th rounded out the Victoria scoring.
Peter Connaughton of Stratford, P.E.I., gave the Panthers an early
1-0 advantage six minutes into the contest, while Ben Paynter of
Kensington, P.E.I., gave the AUS finalists their second lead of the
afternoon when he made it 2-1 at the 33-minute mark.
“We were under some pressure for sure, but we were confident
and as the game moved on they seemed to tire out pretty quick. And
we were pretty determined to get everybody in this game,”
commented Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson, whose team will play in
the consolation final for fifth place Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific
Time. “In fairness to our team our depth really showed
today.”
McFarlane tied the match for the first time in the 16th minute and
once again in the 38th minute, at the end of a spectacular run
through the UPEI midfield and back line.
Keepers Daniel Kilpatrick of Victoria with two saves and Evan
Pivnick shared the win, while Tim Kalinowski of Charlottetown made
four saves in the loss.
UPEI finishes the competition in a tie for seventh position with an
0-2 record.
